I've managed to break through into the tappet chest whilst drilling a hole for a head stud plug. I should not have needed to plug the hole in the first place, but cocked up the original stud drilling.

Anyway, the hole for the plug goes into the water jacket and has also broken into the tappet chest. It is only a pin sized hole but would leak water into the sump.

I'm thinking of using braze/silver solder to plug the hole.

Has anyone had experience of brazing cast iron? Is it going to be possible to get it hot enough with my MAPP blowtorch or do I need something hotter.

The other option is to drill and tap it for a small plug.

I can use my blowlamp to get it hot over a large area and then use the Tig torch on a low setting to get it red hot local to the hole.

i dont know much about it but when my mate repaired my dads plane (wood working, not jumbo jet) he heated it all up, welded it, and then buried it in sand to let it cool slowly

Well I think I've fixed it.

Fluxed it then warmed it up with the blowlamp and then used the Tig torch to get it to a dull red around the hole and then dropped in some silver solder.

Jobs a good un.

Except I've now broken a milling cutter in the new plug after fixing and milling it. Managed to get the plug out and put a new one in.

I'm afraid to doing anything else today in case I do some real damage.

I might just get back to where I started at 9:00am if i'm lucky.

I've just made myself a nice cup of tea.

Time to chill and work out how I'm going to do the job without the 2.5mm milling cutter that I'm not going to replace as it cost me £18.

Nope, but there is a nice chocolate cake sitting in the kitchen for later on. Yum Yum!
