Hi all, I am planning on installing a few auto meter gauges soon but I have run into a few problems, one being the speedo... if I go electronic it means fitting a sensor and some sort of a trigger wheel off the drive shaft/speedo cable outlet/inside the gearbox/??? And I don’t see that being any easy job!
The other option is mechanical but I know the gearing in the auto meter gauge is probably going to be different to the speedo cable gearing on the original speedo, so what’s the best way to adjust the gearing?
The second problem is the fuel gauge, I apparently need to know the "ohm" reading on empty and full at the fuel tank sender unit, I attempted this and got a reading of 1-empty and 13-full but the ranges on the auto meter gauges are way higher, so I wonder if my reading was iffy?? (It is an MPI tank by the way)

So... has anyone fitted these gauges before or have any useful information?? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading. Chris

i have a whole aray of auto meter guages in my mini and came up against the same problems as you, first the fuel guage you will need to get one of the electronic ones, you can get one that you program your self, and secondly the speedo wont be totally accurate but the auto meter speedos work on 1000rpm per mile which isnt far off what the original one were, someone corect me if im wrong or tell me what the rpm per mile is on a mini speedo. you can get speedo cables made to convert the rpms if you want it more accurate

i have got an array of autometer guages in my car. Here is a pic:

The speedo is mechanical and I had a ratio box fitted in line with the original cable. The mob who does this is Airco in Marrickville on Victoria Street.

With the temp, volts, oil pressure you cant get more accurate readings than a mechanical guage.

With the fuel guage, its electric of course but the resistance of the fuel sender does not match up with any of the autometer guages. But you will find one close, then all you have to do is bend the float arm to give your reading the closest possible reading. Well that is what I have done.

Goodluck!! Send me a pic of your car: hipaa@bigpond.com

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

I have an electronic speedo, though not Autometer. I have the sensor mounted in the backplate of the rear driver side drum. The sensor picks up the signal from the heads of the wheel studs passing over it. Easy !!

I also have an array of autometer gauges in my car, i used the aoutometer fuel sender+fuel gauge, but thinking that you could use some rezistors on the cable to get the ohm right, i think that you could use a mini heat gauge (old one) and just remark it

Hi,
If you look on Merlin Motorsport the do a short speedo cable which you should then be able to fit a sensor to the end of *wink*
I've not contacted them about it as I'm not this far on in my build yet :(

There's other ways to do this like epoxying magnets on the pot joint, you could probably mod a speedo sensor off a Corsa or Escort to do it too. Even machine some teeth in the pot joint and use a crank sensor?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Thanks for all the reply's, i like the sound of the programable fuel gauge, i found it on the auto meter site and it seems like the way to go, i think i'll buy an electric speedo aswell, there seems to be a wide range of sensors you can use so it shouldnt be too hard to work somthing out!!
Here's the link to a few pics of the build, its still a long way off. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v219/clubby_turbo/
Thanks a stack once again. Chris
