Hi guys right i'm gonna kick off with my carb issues! I am using a hif44 on my renault 5 turbo and i'm having issues with on boost fueling, cruise is fine etc but around 4k when coming on boost it starts to run lean as if its not pulling the fuel hard enough. I have made an inlet plenum and there is no restrictor in it so will that be an issue?? Tried filing needles etc but still runs lean, messed around with float level and needle vaves, tried different viscosity oils in dashpot as well! I have blanked off the pipe which is next to the fuel inlet on the carb and i have also blanked off the pipe which is at an angle, think they both go into float chamber and inside of carb?
Cheers Tom

The restictor is essential in terms of making the carb work properly under boost, there is a really good post about it some where, I'll try and find it.

Wow, quick work.

that's not really the TM spirit, you need to think about it, then mull it over, then go to that garage. Then realise it's a bit cold and there's beer in the fridge and go back in. Then basically make excuses 'til some time in mid June, before finally spending every free hour in the garage from then 'til midnight before the Mini showdown.

I guess having a n R5 means you don't follow this ritual.

Right i can now speak with authority!! If you do not use the restrictor in the plenum then it will completely lean out your on boost fueling! I have gone through numerous needles and tried lots of float levels in fact i think i have tried nearly everything!
The car is unbelievebly quick and the torque it produces now is fantastic!
I love mini's and have had about 4 but i just seem a bit big for them, saying that my clio isn't much bigger!
Is there any mini meets in the bucks area?

Hi,
It's funny you should post this, there was someone one on here recently asking about putting an R5 carb on their A series.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

SU's do work extremely well when boosted....

I had severe trouble with mine when I made my own plenum with no restrictor....

I ended up with a 0.125" jet ( drilled/reamed from 0.100"...awkward !! ) and seriously filed 0.125" needle, pilfered and adapted from a 2.0" SU

If I had known what the restrictor was for all those years ago....wouldnt I have had an easier time !!! lol.

Well i banked off all the choke unit as well and first of all i thought i had bunged the wrong hole in the float chamber.
I've spent over a week trying to sort it but now its very impressive! I'll put some pics up

Yeah, it was Me *tongue* , funny thing is, since that time I found like 2-3 hif44's that are turbo-ready. One of them is in great condition, but lacks needle.

Hi,
Needle is the one thing you don't need to worry about. You can get new std or mod. You should get your car setup on the rollers so you may need it modding anyway..

Gavin :)

In Graham Bells forced induction bible he speaks of each 90degree bend in charge piping results in a 1psi. drop in pressure.
Therefore if your plenibum restictor is in place to provide a signal of 3psi (over boost pressure) then with the help of a pressure gauge we can search for the correct location in our plumbing to tee-off for the float signal?
Saving having any kind of restriction..
Or is this what people do already? lol

That is a very good idea, mainly alowing you to run less boost at the compressor, and likely to result in running in a higher efficiency zone.

You could bin the plenum completly, saving weight. Hummm.....
