My dad has just bought one and it just will not idle right, it keeps revving and cant keep a constant engine speed. My first thought was idle control valve and it will be having a full service v soon - is there anything else I need to look for?

Hi,
Has it got an idle speed control valve?
Could be an air leak...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

it is most definately a leak on the vacume pipes, they crumble with age, check em all it will be the one at the front buddy, had to do mine when i had it :) the T5 should tick over 900 rpm when warm

if its the same 20v engine as the 850 T5 has, have a look at the very left hand end of the plenum, theres a pipe that runs from this nipple, all the way under the manifold to the right side of the engine bay and back to the pcb valve, these are reknowned for failing

as are all the pipes attached to the vac tree next to the throttle assembly on the right hand side of the plenum

and as richie says, do you self a favour and replace ALL the vacuum pipe with silicone, they will all more than likely be perished.

heres my post on a volvo forum, handy for diagrams etc
