Apologies in advance for opening another 'it won't start' but I'm a bit stuck and wondering what to try next.

Been trying to get a standard turbo unit to fire up for the last two days with no luck. So far I've gone over;

Getting a spark at the plugs
FPR set to 4psi
Checked distributor shaft is in phase (turned engine till no.1 at TDC, engaged dizzy with module over securing bracket and arm pointing at 2 o'clock)
Leads on in 1342 anticlockwise sequence
No vacuum leaks on inlet
Good earth at battery and engine
Tried 'wiping' dizzy back and forth while cranking

It just turns over with what sounds like a bit of a 'bub-bub-bub-bub' from exhaust. Had a few dispersed splutters.

Latest attempt sounded like it was almost going to run, started to pick up for a second or so then back to bub-bub. This was immediately after having plugs out and drying them with a hot air gun. Took a plug out again for inspection and it looks fairly drenched after only a few turns, cylinders were well doused as well but not flooded.

Anybody got any thoughts. Is it over fueling, maybe carb goosed? Like I say I'm a bit stuck as to what to try next *oh well*

But was it on the compression stroke?? if it wasn't you are 180 out. Check the valves for #1 are both closed, its at TDC, then recheck the dizzy

I think so. I took the rocker cover off, and watching the valves, pulled it forward until the inlet on No.1 (water pump side) closed and I felt pressure with my thumb over it.

Just pulled the drive shaft and reengaged as per Metro Haynes manual still no go.

I'll do the timing again just to be sure.

Hi,
Are the plugs getting wet? I think this could be a carb problem...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

The plugs are wet. In fact it absolutely stinks of petrol when I turn it over.

Whats the best way to proceed wrt diagnosing carb problems?

Hi,
Could be choke seals if it pooring it in.
Try it with the choke off and the throttle floored. Just keep cranking it and see what happens...
As for diagnosis, pull it off and try another or rebuild it. :(
Cheers,
Gavin :)

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

Lake District

Try turning your fuel pump off, then crank the engine over with the throttle wide open. Oh dry the plugs first or fit a new set.
If you get it started run it until it empties the float bowl & stops. Then turn the pump back on. The fresh wash of fuel will wash the needle valve and seat, often there is dirt on the seat causing flooding.
If it's carb rebuild time i sell the kits. :)

Well, replaced the inner seal. Put it all back together, still nothing. Then I decided to quintuple check the timing...

Fired up first turn! *surprised*

What a bloody plonker. Not sure how I managed to set it wrong four times!

Cheers for the help guys. Can't believe it's actually running!
