I have rebuilt all the rest of the gearbox now with no issues, but an unsure of how to correctly shim the diff up.

Is there any technical guide on how to do this, or does someone fancy writing a lengthly reply on how it should be done*happy*

Thanks
James

It is explained very well in the Haynes manual, you cant go wrong. Just remember that if its an LSD shim the opposite side

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

"how to modify your mini" by Vizard also has a nice write-up on shimming the diff. I thought at one time I saw a link to someone's webpage that had a very nice write-up...but I did not bookmark it...perhaps someone else will have it.

best way mate is to ignor the haynes.

right fit gaskets to both end covers then torque up the 2 bolts either side of diff on the end covers, leave out all shims.

then accuratley measure your gap with feeeler gauges then add 1 thou for preload.

if you do it the haynes way then the end covers bend and you dont get a accurate reading

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

I dont doubt you are very good with gearboxes, but I dont understand that. What gap are you measuring if both gaskets are fitted?

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Hi,
There's a cut out in the gasket to stuff your feeler blade in IIRC?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I know there is on the transfer case gasket but Ive not seen it on a diff side case.
I am liking the idea of a better way to shim the diff. Unfortunately Ive just fitted my diff and fitted the whole assy in the car so will have to try out Hoggys way next time, if I can get to grips with what he does

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

with both gaskets fitted to the end covers and no shims you are measring the actual gap between the side cover and the beraing its a lot easyier than the haynes way as it doesnt bend the covers and you dont need to measure the gasket, just add 1thou to the gap to get preload fiq

Oh, I see, fit the diff but not the cover. Never thought of that
