Hi

Had a look under the car and ive got a slight leak from a hole with a split pin like thing hanging out, at the bottom of the fly wheel cover.

Can anyone tell me what has caused this and what i can do to sort it out?

Thanks

Hi,
It is indeed a split pin. Primary gear oil seal could well be leaking, also check the bushes while you're there. Oil leaks are almost a standard thing on a Mini, if it doesn't leak you've got no oil in it!
Get it sorted quickly before it ruins your clutch *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

To try and stop this happening again, is there anything 'uprated' i can get when i replace it?

You could try the black MPI seal, and if not fitted, you can get a plastic cover that fits over the primary gear spline.

This seal is a pain to fit by the way. After buggering up two seals last time I tried I was advised to slide the primary gear out and fit the seal to this first. then knock it into the housing. It worked for me.

Minispares sell an uprated seal if you check on there website you will see it. Oil leaks are not a standard on a mini although they are common due to the design of things etc but theres no reason for oil to be leaking unless something is incorrect/knackered. It certainly sounds like the crank/clutch oil seal is knackered and the only way to sort it is to get the flywheel and clutch assembly off and then replace it. May be worth checking that all the breathers are nice and clear and not allowing excessive crankcase pressure to build up before you start removing things though

Not sure these seals were designed to resist to the crank under boost. Mine is new and leaks even with 200mbar boost. Never had that before on two NA Minis.
As said before the best is probably to make a good crank ventilation.

How will it fuck up your clutch Gav?
My daily leaks from there, but I don't want to have to do anything more to it,cos I'm sick and tired of it.

stoke-on-trent

if oil is getting inside the clutch housing (through that seal) it can get on the clutch and ruin the friction plate material
