What is the best way to do this to avoid ring damage, I am aware that if I break a std turbo piston ring thats it i'm fucked as they are now obsolete.

invest in the proper tool, like one of these:
"Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun"

I use a cheapy Clarke tool.... 9.85 @ 145mph

Just to confirm, I use the above tool and had no problem.
Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph
