Check all the components and connections around the Max232 IC, this controls the serial interface.

Some people have problems using some usb-serial converter leads if thats what your using. If you have not already done so i would bung a post on the megajolt site or do a search on there as most problems have been covered on there before.
Good luck and hope you get it sorted

To help narrow down the problem, does your PC (laptop?) have a genuine serial port or are you using a USB/serial convertor (as suggested above) ???

hi guys, right point im at. I have tried it on my laptop with a usb to serial and on a laptop with a serial port running XP. Both give me the same results, timeout error. its the new V4 unit so i made my own cable but i have checked that over with the multi meter and i have also re-check and checked again the voltages across the unit and it all seem right. so im well stuck.

Hi,
First you need to find out what the MJ is using then in device manager right click the port you are using select properties, then click the advanced box, you should be able to set it there.
EDIT: Change your title to include V4 as there's others on here running it and they may be able to help....
Cheers,
Gavin :)

If you made your own cable did you wire it pin to pin (identical numbers) or Rx to Tx and Tx to Rx etc.

i wireid the cable as per the pic on there web site. using the serial pin numbers. Im not really up on RX TX stuff? do i need to have a cross over or somthing?

Sorry, I hadn't realised they were using an RJ11 connector instead of a DB9.
I've looked at the website and it is wired Rx to Tx etc but as the connectors are different both ends of the cable, are you absolutely SURE you have the pin numbers right on both ?
The DB connectors can easily be confused for pin numbers depending on whether you look from the plug side or the solder side.
Also, how have you connected your cable to the RJ11 ? Crimped connections (the usual way for an RJ11) often fail to make an actual connection to the wire.

i bought a phone cable with the RJ11 already on then cut the other end and wiried a DB9 plug on to it. the db9 is numberd on the front side so i went by the number on that to the pic on the MJ website. Also checked there photo of there wired up db9 and it looks the same.

Sounds like the cable should be OK then, although might be worth just checking you've got what you think you have got by doing a continuity check with a DVM/multimeter between the relevant pin numbers.

Other wise, it sounds like a software setup issue.

Most common issues are as above, setting the correct COM port number and then the baud rate (as Gavin says above).

My problem (Megasquirt rather than Megajolt) was getting the drivers right for a USB to serial adaptor (common problem) but you say you have tried with a PC with a "real" serial port.

The only other thing I can think of, was that "real" serial connection actually working ? PCs old enough to have serial connectors will usually have two (sometimes one of them is a DB25 connector) and one is allocated COM 1 and 3 (at the same time!) and the other COM 2 and 4 (at the same time). A quick way to see if they are working is if you can find something old like a serial mouse, unplug the PS2 or USB mouse and see if Windows can see the serial mouse.

Hi,
You have have to reboot before it will see the serial mouse.
I can access my ECU with the terminal program to test coms, can this be done with MJ?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Yes, sorry, it's so long since I've used a real serial connector, I'd forgotten that !!!

Alex, why don't you ask that specific question on the Megajolt (AutosportLabs) forum ?
I know you can with Megasquirt (its part of the build process to check the serial coms) but isn't obviously so with MJ.

Is there a terminal program in the software for the MJ V4?
