Hi lads,
Thanks to a recent topic by johnnysti I've discovered that the primary gear oil seal is leaking on my daily.
I understand I need to remove the flywheel and clutch to replace it but do I have to have the engine out of the car or remove the transfer casing?

The Haynes manual is just confusing me and I can't find anything relevant on here.

Thanks

Tom

You can leave the transfer casing on and change the seal in the car. Use a small screwdriver or similar and tap the top of the seal inwards towards the block. The seal will try to tip and when it goes in at the top it pops out a little at the bottom. Catch a hold of the seal and pull it out. Then just refit as you would normally.

Thank God.
So I just have to remove the clutch and flywheel and the primary gear right?

This leads me on to another question. How do I remove the primary gear? *happy*

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

The primary gear. This will get the seal out as well. It is a bitch of a job. You might also fit a sharp two legged puller behind the splines for the clutch plate.

Hi,
You'll see when you get the flywheel off *wink*
If you can get it off that is! *surprised*
There's a big C clip on the crank that holds the primary gear on. Make sure the engine is at TDC before you pull the flywheel, this stops the C clip dropping and getting jammed in the flywheel *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

i always felt it was false "easy route" to leave the end casing on, for the sake of a gasket and an ten minutes just drop the oil and whip the end casing off ? just my two penneth each to their own.

easy job el. remove fly wheel ect to get to the seal, remove u clip and back washer then either use a screw driver to remove seal or use a puller on the primary gear which will pull out old seal.

the fit new seal to primary gear then slide the lot onto the crank and gentlytap seal and into trans case making sure the the seal is on the running face of the primary gear at all times, its pretty easy to do.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Thanks a mil guys!!!!
Made a (rather slow) start today.Removed all the ancillaries and started loosening the wok bolts.

Richie,it's not that I'm lazy or anything but this is my daily driver i.e shitheap.Just to get to work and back.I've been messing with it for 8 months now and it still isn't ready.the brakes have been giving me seventeen kinds of grief and I'm just sick and tired of the thing.
All I want to do is get it road legal so I have something to drive when I pass me test.
I've got other, more interesting and far more rewarding projects to get on with.

iam with ya now matey, but a job half done is always twice as hard in the long run, ie if you fiddle and tweak just to get it going, i reckon you will be taking it to bits again in a few weeks to replace the same seal.

happended to me many a time unfortunately.

good luck with it buddy fingers crossed you get it sortid :)
