Ive decided to bite the bullet and consider buying new, but have no idea where is best/cheapest to buy from? Im after a gt1752 so would garrett be the best bet or somewhere else?

Cheers
Matt

Hi,
Why not buy an exchange one from Garrett or maybe even Saab?
Cheers,

Essex Turbos have a good reputation for recon.
Might cost with posting though.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Warwick.

theres a company called BTN turbo's did all the exhange turbo's for where i used to work. How ever sometimes the quality vairys usualy on the schwitser turbo's though, I'd guess you would be fine buying one from them.
thought about getting it professionaly reconditioned? i believe turbo-technics did offer that service and have the access to there own dynamic balancing machine, used to send stuff there (again from work) and was top quality when we did so

By the sound of things the GT17's have a reputation of being unrepairable. Alot of the company's have told me that they no longer offer a repair as an option as they are often FUBAR'd! Lol

Just called turbo activ and they'll do one for £340.75 exchange...looks like I'll be going there then!

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

No haven't bothered, I tried the breakers when I first wanted a GT17 and they were telling me prices of £200+ for a second hand "good condition" unit and from what ive been told by the rebuild companies and personal experience once they let go it doesn't take long for them to destroy themselves. *surprised*

i went into owens and they said that garrett no longer release the bearing asembly for the gt series .

my gt17 has just been taken apart and has lost 4 thou off the compressor blades ,
and the bearing is poor .
the piston ring seal on the turbine is in need of replacing with a 10 thou over width ring ,and i will machine the groove to suit .the ring is a tenner . bearing wize ill take apart another gt series turbo and use the good bearing from that .this turbo was a coked up one originally so its done ok .

mine was reconditioned, but it had a problem with the exhaust turine, and he had to replace the whole shaft and wheel, but all that including a rebuild and bigger 360 degree thrust pad, means its easily safe for 20psi. Speak to mark and he will definately sort you out. His buisness is based on word of mouth so he is a top guy!

ring him tuesday!

Cheers for the info ministef, but went with Active turbo as they don't care what condition the return unit is in. There exact words were "it doesn't matter what the condition is, there is usually something we can re-use on it". It was difficult not to laugh at that point as it is fubar! *laughing*

Hopefully will be up and running again tomorrow, ready for the next RWYB or Ace cafe next week!
