West Sussex - dreaming of forced induction!

I have access to a Billet Piper 285/2 camshaft, the only thing with it is the guy whos got it has had it modified by piper to reduce the over lap by 10degrees, how will this affect the performance of the camshaft??? Does it effectively make it a 275???

why not ask the guy who had it done? He surely knows how it will affect the performance.

i may be shooting at fish here and off entirely. but its 8 in thr morning and im gunna give some advice that might turn into a finity...

i presume this alters the lobe seperation angle lowering it meaning the cam is more suited to a head with smaller valves.

or to a engine with a slightly smaller displacement.

eg smaller cc to head valve area ratio

If the overlap has been altered to be 10 degrees less, then assuming the duration hasn't changed, the LCA will actually be wider.

I know this won't help you much, but in my old 1380 i had a cam shaft that was based on a 285 piper, but they made it less lumpy and a bit smoother to drive but regrinding it, it still had massive life but less duration, the result was a more driveable car with 115 bhp at Fly, so still not to bad power. It sounds like your cam might be the same sort of thing.

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph
First 5 port miniturbo to make over 200 bhp on a carb?
First 5 port miniturbo to make over 200 bhp on Injection?

Well the guy had it modified so he could use it with his supercharger setup to reduce the valve overlap and obviously emissions.

Im not going forced induction, but Ill be using a 7port with 38 and 31mm valves fitted................oh and 1380.

Hi,
Well it'll still be 285 in duration, the lower overlap period will make it run smoother at the bottom end and improve economy a little(?) but may reduce top end HP...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

West Sussex - dreaming of forced induction!

but it would be nice if it didnt have to idle at 1500rpm!!

1380 with a 7port head, shouldnt need to go mad with the cam to make nice power......................hopefully. I know its a different kettle of fish to the 5 port as to how it reacts to a cam, read somewhere about cams that need to be timed in between 110 and 115degrees being better suited

the 7 port is meant to be a bit of a funny thing that likes monster cams.

In NA form it allegedly only really coms into its own with 296 or wilder cams.

Ive got someone to do the porting, I just really need to find a pro for sorting me out with the right camshaft. Minisport used one of their own, but Ive had one of those in a previous engine and the lobes fell off it!!!

how lairy do you want to go.

if you cant put up with the cammy ness get a kent cams 266.

if you can put up with a little cammyness put in a 300 degree or more cam shaft.

A little cammyness at 300 degrees, are you sure?!?!?! I would have thought that would make it lumpier than Tysons opponents after 12 rounds!!!!

if you drop the idle to 1 grand when cold the ignition light flickers on and off. and will cut out sometimes.

mine idles at 2k when warm or 2300 with full choke when cold.
