I remember in David Vizard's book about a ratio for removing engine internal weight is compared to loosing the car's overall weight (make sense?)

Without starting a mathmatical barny can anyone shed a bit of light on the subject please?

I would look in my Vizard book but it has vanished, lent it a forgot about it I expect!

PS, got the racing bug back! :)

The ratio i was always taught was 10 times for engine mass lost equivalent to car weight.

So if I have a 3.9 FD and 1:1 drops, 1 to 1 4th gear, forget 1st, 2nd and 3rd for now.

So,for each Kilo how much will it be like removing from the car?

leeds/wakefield.

you need to add your FD ratio to your gear ratio ,
in your case 3.9 plus 2.54 [first gear]

so 6.34, now for every kg you loose off the car it would be times 6.34 in first , so 10 kg the wogine would see 64kgs , and so on what ever the second gear ratio is times the FD, up to top which is direct, so just multiply by the 3.9..

easy peasy.lol.

some usefull info on the subject...

3-SYNCRO 2.57 1.72 1.26 1.00 - Historic racers where homologated.
Excellent fast-road ratios if you can
tolerate no syncro on 1st gear! Works
well for small-bore circuit racers and budget
and grasstrack racers, but needs
constant attention to 1st gear outer.
4-SYNCRO 2.58 1.71 1.25 1.00 - CLUBMAN gear set. Ratios almost
identical to above as this was conceived
as a useful s/cut kit for the road, so same
applications - but without 1st gear probs.
2.54 1.73 1.22 1.00 - ST gear set. Taller 1st gear and slightly
closer ratios make it better suited to
circuit racing, rallying, and the bigger
capacity engines - ie. 1380cc plus.
2.31 1.57 1.19 1.00 - METRO CHALLENGE gears set.
Very tall 1st gear originally designed for
rolling starts, so less than ideal for static
starts. Low FD needed if used for sprints
or hill climbs, especially if 13” wheels
are being used.

JK ‘DOG’ 2.31 1.56 1.19 1.00 - Basic 4 speed non-syncro gear set.
The one used by most circuit racers in
UK where standing starts apply. Same
details as above.
2.16 1.56 1.19 1.00 - These are all variations when alternative
2.16 1.48 1.19 1.00 components are used. Taller first gears
1.75 1.36 1.15 1.00 higher rolling start speeds. Super close
1.69 1.36 1.15 1.00 ratios minimise rpm drop between gear
1.68 1.36 1.20 1.00 changes - allowing high revving engines
with very narrow power bands to be kept
on the boil!
KAD 2.62 1.99 1.67 1.29 1.00 5 speed non-syncro gear set. Only set
available that has straight 1.00 top gear.

Does flywheel count as engine internal? Problably the biggest weight saver.

i have found however with lighter engine internals you cam make yourself look like a tit at the lights if your not used to driveing the car.

Never heard of this formula before, learn something new everyday as they say.
So if you lost a couple of kilos on the flywheel, thats 12kgs in first gear?

No circuits...

Been out of it this season, been flat out on the car. this week, shed 6.5 KG off the car this week and a bit mare to come..

The Swiftune flywheel looks good, just 200 grams heavier than the SH engineering item but £120 cheaper. A new flywheel combined with a sorted crank(running standard at mo0 and and a sorted set of lightened rods we should be on the money.

Car out of body shop tomorrow and entry for Combe on the 13th of sept sent off..
