Agree with above, specification is very good but it is a Dell (I too have a personal dislike of them for technical reasons).

But, more importantly, it's a widescreen display....

Surely with photography in mind, wouldn't a traditional 4:3 display be more appropriate ???

I'm on a Dell XPS M1330 iirc, it's fuckin' awesome. Highly recommended.

Have heard bad things about Dell PC's, but I can't fault my lappy at all. It looks and feels such high quality too.

I don't understand why you would want a laptop for photography stuff. Firstly, LCD's on laptops are renound for being shit for accuracy, and laptops are not power-houses. Sure, it'll have the hard drive space for a good few shoots, but it'll never keep up with a well specced desktop for post-processing or library management.

All just IMHO of course

I have my laptop for internet/word processing and emergency photoshop/web stuff, but I use my home PC that I built to do all the major work on.
Far more reliable....!!

agreed, if you can get a decent desktop, far more capable, but...i can imagine that as you are always out on location shooting cars you want to get them onto the computer straight away?

do you do most of your editing at home or on location? thats the question that will say whether you should get a laptop or a desktop to be honest!

EDIT: yes that laptop should be fine if you cant get away with a desktop!

Rod S, yes that's a good point, I don't like wide screen, but evey thing seens to be just that now adays. Just brought a new monitor at home and i got a 4.3 for that reason, thanks for reminding me!!

So for the guys that don't like Dell what sort of brand would you get if you were getting one?

The idea for the laptop wasn't to take the place on the main home Pc,I can see what your all saying there *wink**wink* what i thought was some times i stay out over night on a job or have a long drive home, in these times i thought if i had a good laptop i could set it going downloading and processing the images in the dead time between jobs or traveling home.

I personally have a Sony Vaio - its very light .... 1.3 kg and almost their smallest model and it does what I want... however I know I spent too much on it *tongue*
However, I would check out Toshiba and Acer before rushing into getting a Dell!!

Not all of them, but most can have them. Important if you do a lot of ecu tuning or use add-ons that require it.

Ive had my old Inspiron for about 6 years now, and its performed very well in that time. Sadly batteries and a few other niggles forced a replacement.

You really need to think about what you need from a laptop, in order to choose.

I decided to risk a non-serial laptop this time....mostly because I didnt want to spend any money, and because almost everyone seems to have a disliking for Dell.
Even though I didnt have any problems, and plenty of other people like them too.
Vista was another matter....I didnt want to risk it. Dell almost only seem to offer Vista now.

I finally opted for a cheap Acer. It is working ok...but their customer service is absolutely crap, and they robbed me when I bought it. Thieving scum didnt stand over the order I placed, and forced a lesser model, at a higher price.
My credit card company wouldnt even help me, given that Acer stole the extra money from my card.

Absolutely furious. On that note, I would say never buy anything from Acer.

I am going to use a PCMIA to Serial port adapter. Have people used these before?

Thanks guys, And sorry to hear about your situ Stevie. I hope it gets sorted very soon for you.

As for Dell, my home PC is Dell and i find it all good. I guess you have to use what you have got on with in the past. e clever thing with dell is i went to PC world today just to have a look at a few as there are all on display. the chap there said that as i wanted to take vista off it and Put XP on the new one, that with a dell that would be good as if the XP went wrong or you wanted to get vista back on the laptop, it will still be on it with the seria numbers on there, where other laptops if you over right the main programme you will loose the vista all together.

I used to work in IT distribution, I'd not recommend an Acer unless it's super cheap and you're prepared to throw it away if anything goes wrong.
