Purchased a set of coil springs ( the hardest set supposedly for racing ) and fitted them. Now I find my car suffers from chronic under steer, squats excessivley under acceleration and in gentle corners.

Are there different makes that run different rates of spring? I assumed they were about the same, was I incorrect in this?

I was thinking about getting the rear springs swapped for another pair of front springs to see if this solved the problem, am I waisting my time and better of re-fitting my rubber cones and filing this under dont go there again?

Has anyone else had issues with these springs? If so how did you resolve them?

Is the car a bit high on the front? I had the same problem untill I lowered the front but I had to cut the high/lows.

Spring poundage was what exactly?

Good question, no idea. But on cornering you can visibly see the role of the body to the point where it seems that the inside wheel is lifting.

This is a major departure from how the car handled before and she is slamed at the front just about touching the bump stops the same height as with the rubber cones. the straight line ride comfort is much better but the cornering ability as taken a turn for the worse.

Any other thoughts

Hi,
I've read on here when you lower it a lot the top arm doesn't have the correct leverage against the spring, so effectively reduces the spring rate making it too soft.
Don't know if this applies to you?
What type of rubber cones did you have?
Is the rear higher than the front?
It sound as though the coils are softer as comfort has improved.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Standard cones were fitted to begin with. On fitting the coil springs I lowered the rear by one turn on the Hi-lo's.

Going to remove the coil springs and send them back ill live with the organ jarring ride so I can enjoy better handling.

Thanks for the comments.

Are these are the springs that replace the cones, or the damper/spring units?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Somewhere around Swindon

i have no experiance in setting up suspension other than my own but i would have thought that mixing rubber spings with coils springs is a no no, also putting a high poundage front spring compaired to the back on a fwd car is again something you just dont do

You can mix no problem you just need the right rate of spring.

Ok. Gave it one last try jacked the rear up by 2 turns and the fronts up by a turn and a half.

Better but still not close to how she was. Talked to the retailer and was told that if there was any damage to the powder coating that he would not accept them back. Not even going to go there, what are the chances that they are blemish free.

I fear I have yet more expensive paper weights to find a home for,

If its understeering lowering the front or raising the rear helps try lowering the front to where it was with the rear as is.

Did that and the stance was all wrong. The front wheels were right up in the arches with a 2" gap at the rear, not a good look. Ill let it settle for a while seeing as I doubt they will be going back and see if I can mess around with the settings and keep the stance.

shouldnt really need to let them settle i wouldnt have thought. springs shoulnt really "seat down" like the cones do.

where you set them should be where they stay.
