I am having some major issues with my car as of late, recently it has start popping and banging on the down run, when you are in say 3-4 gear down at about 1500rpm and you try to accelerate it almost chokes itself and then takes off like a rocket, oh yer and i am only getting about 21 miles per gallon any ideas before i take it over to mini speed?

MAP sensors always give trouble on these. It would probably be the first thing I would try.
Whack a ultimeter on the lambda and see how its reading

Have a diagnostic done on it, but make sure you check ALL the ground points, clean them and make sure they are secure. Most important one is the ECU ground behind the ECU itself just below the triangular brace on the bulkhead.

Other things that can cause these sorts of symptoms are the cam sensor or map sensor. It may not be the sensor itself, but the wiring.

These cars are suffering more and more with wiring faults, some have found the common wiring points buried deep in the loom itself suffer corrosion and breakages.

Good luck

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Hi,
All of the above, cam sensor strangely enough will cause over fuelling on a Mini!
Also vacuum pipework or air leaks.
If it's it a cam sensor fault logged in the ECU cam timing is also a possibility...
Cheers,
Gavin :)
