Hi,

Just a quick Q. I wired up my spi fuel pump and it runs constantly as long as the ingnition is on. So its always pumping.

Erm, should it do this? I thought it would be alright. But then someone said it shouldn't do that. Iv noticed on my BM it only runs to prime it then cuts off i think until you start the car.

Cheers

James.

i would have thought that it will constantly run and keep the pressure up but then the amount of feul returned into the tank will vary depending on how much feul your engine is depending.

im damn sure that the only time my pump didnt run with the ignition off in my SPI was when the inertia switch was rattled by my bone lodging suspension!!!

i would say its ok but am most probably be told im wrong in a minute.

Ignition = pump on on a injection/turbo Mini.

i wouldnt have it running all the time you can wire it up so it runs when cranking then runs when the engine is running. also you need some for of cut off in emergency like a inertia switch which will kill the pump when you crash

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

what car/ engine is this pump on?

Only the engines with a fuel injection ECU will start and stop the pump as you suggest. Thats why your BMW turns off the pump after a few seconds, its a normal fuel injection thing.

I wouldnt worry about it as long as its on the ignition feed, and you have fitted an inertia switch

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Hi,
You could do the job right and fit a fuel pump relay off an Escort XR3i, then it will work the same as the BM *wink*

Cheers guys, yeah im gonna nab an inertia switch off a car asap. Not running it without one. have access to a range rover classis one if that will do?

As long as its not doing any damage then il stay with it as it running constant. I dont mind it just wondered if it was alright.

Might have a play with it to see if i can alter it in future.

Carl, i see you have great faith in me.lol. Lets hope i dont stuff it anyway.

And btw, its an spi tank on a 1989 mini with a stockish metty turbo engine.

Nabbing a relay off an escort sounds like a plan, any reason why an escort though?lol

If I'm thinking along the same lines as Bat, the early Golf GTi had the same - basically the early fuel injected cars used a predominantly mechanical fuel injection system (K-Jetronic I think it was called) which didn't have electrical injectors under the control of an ECU, but a mechanical metering system instead, so there wasn't an ECU to contol the stop start function of the pump relay. Instead they built the circuitry on a small board inside the relay case. It comprised a timer to run the pump for a couple of seconds when the ignition was turned on and then it stopped the pump until the engine was started. You'll need the wiring diagram of the donor car to see what the engine running signal to the relay is - on the Golf I think it was either oil pressure or tacho, can't remember which.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Hi,
Escort one because I know it has one and how to wire it up! *wink*
Golf as Rod suggests, the Escort was a tacho feed for the run signal.
I've got a brand new Durite relay for the Escort I could do you a deal on as I won't need it now...

you can do it with a normal 5 pin relay and using the oil pressure light feed. think metty turbos do it this way. this is the way i used to do it but i never quite perfected it and the oil light used to glow very dimmly when engine was running i was sure it just needed a diode or summot.

when i had me last a series i simply just had a switch and inertia switch. altho its embarrassing when you forget to turn it on. lol

Switch i think is really cool. but thats prob my auldskool toggle switchy nostalgia!!

This has always been my wiring idea.
ive never probs with lights on and that, however i did always have that doubt in my mind.
i usually run stuff on teir own. so if its dodgy guage or whatever, its stand alone, and easy to identify

just my auld thoughts
