I have checked the wiring connections and they are all ok.

When the switch is in the centre position the headlights come on, and turning it in the other two position (up and down) the headlights go off and nothing else.

Also the stalk does nothing.

This all happens with ignition turned just before the engine fires up?

I have also changed from a starter moter mounted solenoid to one mounted on the bottom of the wing.

Could this have any influenece, you help would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Jon

Try a new switch first. The headlights should not come on at the centre postion, unless you are just seeing the sidelights.

The lights should operate independant of the ignition switch. Have you got a good earth on your new solenoid? I learnt recently (thanks Gavin :) ) that duff earths have a lot to answer for

I'm with Paul, could be the switch has died, especially if you have fitted brighter lights/bulbs.

The earts are all o.k, have checked them all and everything else works fine its just the headlights.

Fuses are all ok as well!

They are new headlights and bulbs, and have looked into them when on and its definately the lager main bulb, not the side light.

A point was made that they should work independent of the igniton, does this mean the light wire on the solenoid is on the wrong side, its in the middle position, not same side as battery cable?

Next step - change this i guess, and then change the switch?

Thanks for the help guys

You did not answer the question on the lights coming on in the center position... so do they come on bright 1/2 bright or full??

If its a later Mini when the switch is in the center position and ignition is off there are just sidelights, then with the ignition on there is dim headlights (headlights via a resistor in the right wheel area)

Telling us what happens here may help decide whats wrong..

Hi,

Bit of a twist to the problem this morning.

Change the red/brown wire from switched live on solenoid to permanently live.

I now have off when the switch is in top position, middle also have nothing, and bottom i have headlights.

I then have full beam when i push the stalk forward, but no full beam when i pull it backwards to flash.

All of this is without the ignition on at all now.

Any ideas, or do i even need the sidelights, flasher?

Thanks

Jon

ANother quick update.

When sitch is in middle position 'sidelghts' one works and one doesnt, could this be the bulb?

Also the headlight flasher works when no lights are on using the stalk.

It doesnt work when headlights are on though, but it does work when lights are on and i use a screwdriver between the contacts?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Jon

Hi,
Nearly there now!
Side lights could be down to bulbs
Sounds like the column switch could be knackered.
Do you own a test light?
Cheers

O.k!!

All lights were sorted, sidelights and flash worked fine.

Now i have just started putting back together to test and lost flash function, horn and directional indicators. All from the one stalk. Which fuse is this as i have checked them all and they look fine.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Jon

quickly whip the cowling off and check all onf the contacts and clean them up.

be carefull when you put the cowling back on keep checking that you have the full movement in the stalk. my cowl was sitting too far back and wouldnt let me pull it far enough forwards to flash.

if that doesnt help then you need go get yourself a test light and test every fuse but putting the test light on all of them (individually) and making sure that you have live both sides of the fuses with the ignition on (sorry caps).

if you dont find anything worn its time to use the test light on the wires on the steering coloumn. sorting out the ones that you need and then testing them as you operate the switch.
