Fellas, after wiring up my Alternator (Nippon Denso), my car seems to struggle a little when turning over. Also when i connect the batt i get a bit of a spark.

Heres how ive rigged her up, except ive a heavy gauge wire from the nut on the alternator to the stud on the solendoid.

Then followed the diagram below, obviously i have now disconnected the battery.

If i remove green plug from the alternator its fine. So im leaving it off for now.

Hi,
Sounds like you may have a diode down :(
CAn you stick an ammeter btween the alt pos stud and the battery feed cable?
You have got everything else to the alternator on an ignition feed (not permanent) haven't you?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

But if you disconnect the alt plug it doesnt do this. Obviously if this is happening there is a draw of power somewhere.

IIRC the positive goes to the switched live, looks like it is on permanantlyu there.

The Green and Brown wire goes to the ign feed the lights feed then off to the solenoid.

All these are just connected together.

Hi,
Sorry, should have put more words in the first answer!
By "diode down" I'm referring to one of the diodes in the alternator has gone down to earth, this will cause the draw you're seeing, use the ammeter to check *wink*
You may possibly be able to feel the alternator is a little warm too.... ?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

If the ignition feed to the alt is permanent that'll be the problem, as the field winding will be permanently excited

So run a wire from the IGN Live on ths alternator to one of the spades next to the grn wires on the fuse box. Does it have to be a decent gauge wire? Also, what exactly does this wire do?

Hi,
14/0.30 would do, about the same thickness as sidelight wiring
It powers the field winding to excite it.
Other alternator use the power coming down the warning light wire to do this instead.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Right on, im probably thinking it may be a frigged Alternator then! It was from fleabay so ive probably been shafted. Following the 1275GT Wiring Diagram the the wire goes direct to the large spade on the solenoid? Could i not just do this?

Hi,
Don't do it, you'll just end up with a warm alternator and a flat battery!

Right, ill run a wire to the fuse box, what about the existing loom wires, shall i just isolate these from eachother. (the ones that go to the control box)
