Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Hi,
Lol!
That looked like a small charge had been put in there to blow the blade off! *surprised*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

i'm working on the latest fan blade off test at rolls-royce at the minute

your right gav, the blade is deliberately detonated using several charges, quite impressive stuff.

the crazy thing is the engine is supposed to stay balanced enough to keep running!!

a lot of work goes into validating these engine, makes me a lot more confident about going jet aircraft.

Warwick.

my lecturer at uni always goes on about aircraft and how they have to be perfectly ballanced otherwise they shake themselfs to bits, blade material cant creep ether and blades cant revolve too fast otherwise they go supersonic quite easy *oh well* quite easy to see how they cost so much to build! INteresting vid' though cant imagin how much testing they would have to do to the engine before they could release it for use

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

trust me, we dont need explosive charges to get ours to fall off *happy*

went to a site the other week where they'd had the compressor turbine to pieces. there were 6 big bolts missing and they said that they were sure they werent in the engine.

Me and another lad had to rebuild it although all casings were already refitted so we couldnt do any checking.

Was a bit nervous hitting the start button that time!!!

In that vid they are actualy testing the fan blade module to make sure it can withstand the force of a fan blade letting go. I believe the engine in the vid was a trent. That vid is quite old, the fan caseing is lined with Kevlar and indeed does contain the force of a blade letting go.

Blades do creep and there are special replaceable liners that accomodate this. I am not sure about the single crystal blades on the RB211 and trents but I believe blade stretch and flex on these generation of engines is vastly reduced.
