Hi, does anyone know how long fuel can be sat for unused before it looses its combustibility?

Is it possible that it won’t ignite if unused for say 2 years?

cheers, Mark.

i have 2 x 5 liter cans in my garage that i filled with optimax about 18 months ago and recently i have been wondering if it would be worth using it before i cant no more.. might not be worth the risk then??

Most old style low compression engines are fine on older fuel, but not 2 years old !!On my competition bikes if the fuel is even 7 days old they can be a bitch to start, so I drain the fuel after every use, put in fresh and they go straight away.I know of older A series that have started on 10 year old fuel, but doesnt it stink ?.

For a normal (read low spec, type) car I'd be happy to stick it in mixed 50:50 with some new fuel, even if it was 2 years old.

I'd keep it out of a modern performance motor.

I heard oldish fuel wasnt as much of an issue in 2-strokes, think thats why our petrol mower fires up after months of not being used, dunno how true that is though.

Well I have had it sat in my 325 for over 2years and it fired up first time

However it has probably corroded the fuel rail and injectors and fuel pump*frown*

Having said what I said above, the hilclimber started first press of the button on fuel that's sat in the tank since October 2008.

My mower is 4-stroke. Firstly it never fooking starts easily, and secondly, if you put the race fuel in (optimax with CVL) it melts parts of the carb!

I would say that the way the fuel is stored is also a factor. Because it absorbs water, well atleast the racing juice that we get here does and has caused trouble for me in the past.

Looks like it was the old juice.. drained out 17litres and put a fresh 5litres on BP ultimate, and after a bit of fiddling it fired up :) :) :)

until some twat come over to say turn it off or he would "knock me out"... nice...
