£200 is around the going rate for a decent wide band sensor and gauge. The cheaper narrow band versions are no use at all Imo.

http://www.doyouneedabrain.co.uk/prices.htm Is this 1 of those diy installations or is it better to get it professionally fitted? And where abouts does every 1 fit their lamda sensor? |

how much? hav i bought a load of rubbish then? I got a 4 wire lambda sensor for a renault off ebay for £12.50 british made as well (1 wire guage, 1 wire earth, 2 wires heaters for more accurate reading till engines warm). Then a decent old school pointy needle a/f ratio gauge from america off ebay for £40. thought that would do the trick. Should i have something different? |

Hi, It 2 wires, ignition positive and an earth. You'll need to weld a boss in your downpipe to mount the sensor in. I do those for £3. Mount the gauge switch on and enjoy!
Cheers, Gavin :) Gav would u need the motor out for fittin the lamda? sounds like i'll me pm'n u very soon , would these lamda's work with any gauge? i have an autogauge a/f gauge.

whats with the band thing then. I didnt really research it at all, just thought " it'd be nice to know when its running lean/rich without guessing and bought a sensor and gauge. Whats the benfits of wide band over narrow band, more range? surely narrow band tells you when mixtures ok, or is it just a rough average with narrow band. Thanks fir ur knowhow :) |

A narrow band sensor only works well around stoichiometric ratio, hence it has a narrow band of operation.

think i get it - basically the diyers version... like the differnce between an oil pressure light an an oil pressure gauge, one tells you when somethings wrong, other tells you whats actually going on.

ah i just looked at your afrs basically are you saying when your flat out and theres a lot of air (17) being sucked in and a relatively small amount of fuel (1), the wide band can still detect how much whereas a narrow band would be lost? |

a narrow band can only tell you 3 states, you either have a stoich ratio 14.7:1, less than that, or more than that. a narrow band wont tell you how much less or more.

GOTCHA. so either bin the setup, or take it down to my rollin road where they'll shove a wide band sensor up its arse, and tune it... then take note of where it sits at on my gauge straight after its been tuned and keep those readings in mind (ignoring the markings saying its too rich etc...) or am i still missing a trick

btw, i dont plan on tuning it myself, i'm just going to build it, roughly set it up, then get it tuned by the locals. I just put that gauge in to keep me safe, but it looks like it wont |

Taking a note of where the narrowband gauge sits won't help because that will change with the temperature of the sensor and exhaust gas. So the AFR may be different and the gauge will still read the same.
