Hello,
I forgot a think about knock sensor. To detect knocking you have to integrate the signal you read with the sensor. If the integral is a bit flat it's good but if the integral makes a jump you have knocking. I will give you a paper on this.
This sensor is made of a weight that vibrate a lot when knocking comes. It's a accelerometer.

works liek a charm :) but i recomend you test it with a good variable bench supply (or potentiometer and a good multimeter) for accuracy first :)

A bit of post necromancy here;

Has anyone fitted a knock sensor yet? or was it one of those things that got talked about but never happened?

Sorry if Im dragging up this thread yet again, but is there anything relatively cheap available on the market for this purpose yet?

Are things like these gimmicks?

http://www.thor-racing.co.uk/KnockLite_Kit-KnockLite_Kit.asp

or is knock too hard to moniter on an a series with sc drops/gears?

Hi,
I've heard the A series would be difficult due to background noise from valve train and trans.
The second one looks the better bet as it can be cailbrated, like it says in this post and the link positioning and torquing the mounting bolt is critical to good detection :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I have been using det cans on my car when setting up seems to do the job fine, So far ran upto a bar without blowing headgasket melting pistons etc, this is with watching the fueling on a wideband. There is alot of background noise from the box and drops but it seems to work ok!

Well at the minute im using a mechanics stephoscope (sp) bolted to the head and extended to the drivers seat with rigid tube so you can listen. There are lots of discussions about it on other forums just type in det cans in google. It cost about a fiver from machine mart. I set my mini up with this last year as well as my r5gtt. Very crude but seems to work and a lot cheaper than a electronic unit.

No definately not a piss take commonly used in the renault scene and impreza by the look of things! Think stevieturbo uses this method aswell seen a couple of his posts on the pistonhead forum.

"det cans" are basically a pair of ear muffs.

Bolt a bit of copper tube to a suitable location, and link this tube to the ear muffs with some decent tube ( hardwall stuff is better than soft rubber )

Detonation sounds like a dull splat, and they really are quite effective.

A stethoscope or similar can also be used, and attached to the block in a similar fashion.
When I was at the dyno on friday, they just used like a docs stethoscope for the ear bit, and a banjo with nylon tube attached for the block pickup.

I have tried the electronic version ( autospeed ) made from a hearing aid type amplifier and a mic. These pickup a lot of background noise though.

I have a Link Knockblock here too...still havent got around to using it yet.

Link also make a Knocklink, and MSD do a similar device. Check Summit for the MSD stuff. It isnt too expensive.

At the upper end of pricing.
There is a group buy on this at the minute over on 22b.com
http://www.phormula.co.uk/Default.aspx

Here is a device that Motec distribute here. Supposed to be very good...a little pricey.

Im sure there are some DIY stuff out there too....Isnt there anything in the MS world for knock detection ?

MS users seem to mostly use :

http://www.viatrack.ca/

there is also some home brew curcuits lurking on teh megasquirt manuals somewhere inc the formulae to tune the circuit to the engine.

I think the PoleStar can be bought with a knock sensor. If anyone has the software they could check what settings are modelled.

Hi,
What you set your engine up with will depend on what you are going to do with it afterwards.
If you just set it up and leave it at that, use the long pipe method.
If you're going to run an ECU with knock control, then use the mic socket on a laptop and look at the waveform to give you the setting to put into the ECU for knock control.
This can apparently be done with closed loop control at idle and just ramp up the advance till it stalls, then check your recording...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

The electric DIY versions are good, but they really do pick up so much background noise it can be hard to hear detonation.

I can only imagine what a straight cut gearbox will sound like !!!! or drop gears !

The manual stethoscope type device is very good...and very cheap.
The laptop idea is good though, Ive heard of it before, but never tried it myself.
