the engine came out saturday for a leaking manifold gaskit. which i thought fair enought a bit of a pain but i can cope with that.

once the engine was out took apart all the turbo assembily and was cleaning manifold faces and my friend was looking over the turbo and found a big crack in the wastgate.

the crack runs from the outside edge to the wastgate port and then from the other edge of the wastgate port to the impeller port and is right the way through the casting.

so the car is off the road till i can arrange a replacement exhaust casing or replacement t2 turbo

used to see these cracked all the time...dont worry...when i got annoyed at them even belting them with a heavy fucking hammer they wouldnt smash off

How do you people manage to take such crap photos? No offense, but the pictures you've provided are really useless.

i no i did not take the photos my mate did on a v old camera best he could get unforutnatly.

what do you guys recon im worried of using this turbo again because it has cracked between the wastgate and the impeller im worried if it colapses it will distroy everything i have worked hard on and paid good money on to get the engine to this point.

some opinions and advice please

i doubt a complete falure would do harm to anything other than the turbo bud

mines far far worse than that! they tend to crack very quickly then thats it.

So they don't get the Vegard seal of appproval then?

Someone photoshop up a "Vegard seal of approval" picture that he can stamp posts with. Something involving aviator sunglasses....

As Tom Jones would say "Its not unusual".

They crack here all the time, use it and keep an eye on it from time to time. If you get a rebuilt turbo look to see a new turbine casting has used.

I've ran cracked T2's never had a problem

ok thanks for the advice im a mate to take a look so will let you know the out come the turbo has only been used for 6 months which is the bit that worried me

If it is still providing the boost, then fit it back on and forget about it.

My T2 has the same crack, but I've not used it yet.
