Dave, I know we've discussed this before. If the spring on the slave is fitted the other way, won't the clutch bearing take a hell of a beating?

Its not even a threaded to stop?

Just the spring.

Its only the adjuster nut backwards.

No,

In short, if a bearing is rated for (say) 8000lbs intermittent load which I suspect the standard bearing is, then (as a rule of thumb) loading it up with between 1% to 4% of the max rated load will in theory have an infinite life.

Consideration though, needs to be given to minimum load for the operating conditions; In that if there is unsufficient load to overcome the lubricant viscosity (also considering cold temps) then the bearing elements will slide, not roll. That is never good for bearings! Not usually a problem for most applications of our vehicles to be honest!

Does speed not come into account Dave? So even if it is only taking a small load, but at high speed? It has been ages (in fact in uni) since I did any bearing calcs.

well, yes - but I'm assuming the bearing is rated for the speed it's intended to be used in... I can't imagine a small bearing like the release bearing having a problem with speed; remember every release bearing you come across these days is sprung-loaded against the diaphram.
