I've mentioned this in another thread but thought it might be worth starting a new thread so people and find it in a search.

I am looking to buy either the MED all alloy duplex vernier timing set
http://www.med-engineering.co.uk/product_d...50&vlang_id=394

or the minispeed vernier timing belt kit http://www.minispeed.co.uk/classic/index.c...t&id=belt-drive

both for the same price! but which would you suggest?

yes, but I can get it for the same price as the MED chain kit.

MED's got 2 votes now. im sure vizard prefers the belt for a "money no object" build, but duplex verniers as the next option down.

I guess the belt is lighter and quieter, but ultimately the chain is more reliable.I have only ever used a duplex chain with a tensioner and never had to replace a chain or tensioner on any engine I have built, nor do they ever "tinkle"(Now I suppose I wait for the usual rain of comments)Pun intended.

Its the power lost in a chain where the advantage exisits...

a belt is nice in a high revving engine as it doesnt transfer harmonics to the valve train- being rubber, but its almost twice the weight of an chain as it has steel sprockets and a massive cast alloy backplate

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

2-3hp? No way. The fan is in the region of this and that is obviously more power sapping than that small chain.

a few years back i won a non adjustable belt drive on ebay, apparently off a miglia racer, the crank pulley (they were made of some cheap alloy) was worn beyond use, not sure if this is still an issue with them or not?

Ive got a belt on the van and it appears ok but I paid diddly for it so didnt have a good reason not to use it.

Thinking about the size of that cam pulley and the new rubber seal - this is a potential area of weakness in terms of oil leakage as the front plate on many belt drives does not have an engine breather like a chain set up has on its cover.

I've modidfied the belt cover on mine so that I can inspect the belt without taking the cover off.

The TDC marks on the cover plate are also sometimes out of place when you time the engine by strobe so I machined my own before fitting the cover on.

Spare belts are easy to get hold of so I'm looking at one every 15-20k to play on the safe side.

Seeing as I've only done 1100 miles since the Minimag photoshoot in June, that'll be one every 16 years then !

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Belts degrade over time and need to be changed at regular intervals. 3yrs max in my book. Plus they stretch and are vulnerable to damage.

Just look at all the best engines out there, BMW,Honda no belts on them. Chains all the way for me.

I don't like belts one bit...! IMO.

I'm sure belts on modern cars are there purely to keep servicing departments in business.

There seems, however, a trend back towards chains atm. My Subaru has a chain, and a fooking long one too.

As it happens we run a belt on the TT, but it was free and a vernier type.

I you could get vernier simplex chains, that would be my preference. Could anyone make one?

Hi,
I guess the weight of the belt setup isn't the best. As for reliabilty I've ran the same belt for 10 years, due to a period of belt unavailability. They don't rattle and the timing never shifts. A good choice for high lift cams.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Maybe, I've never looked at one. but now I will, if it's a goer, then the belt can be fitted to the TT3 motor.

Yes it is, but I dont have access to machinery at the moment to make sprockets so it would cost a fortune
