Folks,

A while ago I bought a complete engine / transmission with all of the turbo bits on it. It's now installed, and getting close to being a going concern, so I thought I'd find out if I have an unleaded engine. Lo and behold, the two or three websites I've been to on the subject of engine numbers suggest that this isn't a turbo engine, but a HLE.

Can anyone kindly clarify for me?

If it's not a turbo donk, I'll be shocked and surprised - I'll have been had!

What is a HLE? (I'm in Australia, that's not an acronym we used here).

Thanks all.
Matt

Matt.

Assuming the head has never been off and is the original, the question of 'is it a turbo engine' could be answered by taking the rocker cover off and checking that the exhaust valve stems are larger than the inlets (they are bigger on turbo engines as they are filled with Sodium).

If not, then it don't sound like a turbo lump.

It doesn't help with answering whether it's unleaded though, you'll need to do some more searching on TM for that.

Good luck.

Rich.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Hi,
AFAIK there weren't any unleaded turbo engines. The later N/A metros were U/L but not the turbos.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Thanks for the replies folks.
I'll whip the rocker cover off and look for the large diameter exh. valves.
as for the unleaded bit, I'll see how much it'll cost to add the lead from a bottle. no cat converter, so nothing to wreck, except my wallet.
cheers all.

Be carefull which lead additive you use, there are about three different base metals used as the alternative to lead in the substitutes and one has a reputation (although not scientifically proven) of causing high erosion rates on turbine wheels.

I can't remember which, but it's the less commonly used one.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

There were no unleaded turbos from the factory. They stopped producing them when cars had to be unleaded compatible (January 1990 onwards).

Turbophil had a butt plug made that seemed to be suitable. He may have finished with it now and have it kicking around spare

12HC16AA is a Metro Turbo Engine taken from a 1985-1988 Metro Turbo.
