Right, listen in...

I have been thinking for a while about putting together a bespoke system.

Specifications.

Quality Stainless Steel
Classic of to the side rear exit.
2 inch diameter.
Possibly carbon oval can.
2 1/2 or 3 inch single rolled end tail pipe.
Fitting kit provided if needed.
Designed to fit over the "Maniflow" type down pipe.

A simple designe with a TRUE 2 inch bore, NOT one that WAS 2 inch and then bent badly reducing the size and therefor flow. (like leading brands do)

Ofcourse this design will be made as light as possible.

I enquired at the Autosport Show with a major exhaust company who make sytems for the big names in performance exhausts.

As far as price goes it depends on the finnish spec and how many I buy in bulk but I am going to market it around a similar price to the popular sytems around on the market, no names mentioned intenionally.

Who thinks a besoke quality pipe made especially for the mini turbo is a good idea and who more importantly would be interested in one.

Jon.

I'd say if it was better flowing than the current 'brands' yet at around the same price then you'd be on to a winner there.

Indeed, I will be aiming to make it better than the others.

Put it this way, I had to modify my "Play Mini Style" system to flow more gas on MOT 977L to help win D class twice.

If they were about the same price as current systems on the market, but better then i would be interested, I need an exhaust system in the near future, so keep us updated.

Just look at the restrictions....

Get cutting and rewelding.

Jon,

To satisfy the specification you started with (which is good), the problem I had was the downpipe itself.....

I couldn't find anything a true 2", in stainless, and with mandrel (non-reduced) bends...... so I made my own.

Obviously not the mandrel bends, I bought them, but cut and welded the rest up to suit what I wanted.

The annoying thing was none of the suppliers I spoke to could do exactly what I wanted, so I had to compromise and weld bits that I would have thought should be "off the shelf"...

From the downpipe onwards, the remaining 2" stainless system is available from at least three manufacturers, but everyone has their own opinion as to which is best.

TBH, I was more interested in getting the downpipe right, especially as I have two versions, one N/A for development of the fuel injection, and then the turbo one (yet to be tried).

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I like the look of your downpipe Rod - looks good. Perhaps this is something that could be looked at in conjunction with the exhaust.

how about adding a down pipe to the full set-up? obviously in stainless again.

or as an optional extra?

All good feedback Rod S, I will have to look at a down pipe as a any exhaust system is onlly as free flowing as it's most restrictive point.

In a nutshell I want to produce what could be argued to be the best system out there for many qualifying factors AND for the right price.

I would be interested in an exhaust system if you go ahead with them.

Just a thought on downpipes. I'm sure it would be more difficult and costly for you to make downpipes as there are several different turbos in use whereas the rest of the system is basically "universal" to all turbo minis

Yes all valid points, I do not want to cater for every application and become stuck with loads of various options on the shelf...

But performance is something I am passionate about, unlike these companies that just bend a pipe with little thought...

It seams more and more people have gone away from the standard T3.

Is 2" a bit restrictive for a high output turbo engine? if going this far, why not got foe 2.5" I'd also got for a large bore down pipe too.

Here is the exhaust fitted to mine, not sure of the dia, it's 3" OD I think, I'll check tonight.

2 inch in my opinion is a good size as it will fit through the under tunnel past the gear change gummins AND this---- http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=263853 ---- thread it was not disputed 2 inch would cater for 250bhp, more than ample for 99.9% of our cars.

I have not ruled out a bigger bore, MOT was 2 1/4 inch

certainly an interesting project Jon,

as you say you cant cater for every thing, but i think a system bigger than 2" is worthwhile, after all its easy enough to sleeve down to a 2" down pipe if needed.

I think a lot of people (apart from on this forum) would go for a 2 1/4" system over the currently available ones, without any proof of it being better.

Good call Jon

Im thinking there would definately be a strong interest for this, you would just need to get it out there in magazines so it is known about and not just rely on here (im sure you already know that), but that shouldnt be a problem though
