Fastest A Series Mini in the World

leeds/wakefield.

my dad bpought me one of these when i was Eleven Years old, so that was in 1975, the one i had was bought as a non runner f rom a Leeds dealer for me to go scrambling on , dad paid £50.00 for it and it was M reg , so not that old either at the time although it had already started to rod on the rear chrome mudguard,

it was sold after a couple of years for about £150.00.

My first ever form of motorised transport, I sold it and bought my first Mini as soon as I passed my proper driving test.

A loophole in the law (then) allowed them to be called mopeds so I could ride at 16 and it was really a 50cc motorbike and you could make them go much faster than was ever intended for a 16 year old on a moped..... (and I did!).

Mine was orange (although I soon changed that) and I bought it new with a loan from my parents (I had to get a Saturday job to pay it back) when they had only been out about a year....

Must be careful, showing my age....

I turned 16 just as they raised the age limit on proper motorbikes.

The rich kids had the FS1E or the Honda SS50 ????.

I had a Raleigh Mobiletta that had variable ratio belt drive. The engine used to swing backwards and forwards as you rode it. You could get 45mph out of it downhill with you chin on the handlebars.

when did they raise the age limit?

Me and my mates were all riding 50cc motorbikes to school 9 years ago!?

I must have missed the change!!!

They were the main two "loophole" variants but from memory but there was an italian job launched shortly afterwards - Garelli ???? or some similar sounding name which boasted a 6 speed box :)

The Honda SS50 was 4 stroke so was allways slower off the mark than the FS1E.....

Memories :)

really?

How the hell were there 9 of us, 1 with an fs1e, riding them to school when we were 16??

most had motorcross style bikes, dt50s, ts50s, etc

im confused!

or did it change again when they brought in the CBT?

i had a yamaha ss , gold with white stripes ,but otherwize the same as a fs1e , i got it up to 55 on the flat ,but my home made attempt at an expansion chamber made out of half the original exhaust ,a cone made of copper sheet ,and a stinger made of a brass covered curtain rod ,was not a success , the floor was covered in silver solder rods ,but it just wouldnt stick with a butane blow torch ! ah the joys of being 16 and not having a clue lol

We had a bit of a tuning war aswell!

big bore kits and aftermarket exhausts etc

i managed to get a dt50 to 61mph! and was winning

then one of the rich lads go brought a brand new derbi cenda, that did 73!

so a friend on mine bought an ar125, put ar50 badges on it, and rang the dvla and changed the log book, he won!

In 1973 the law was that it had to be limited to 50cc and be fitted with pedals.

My mate had the Honda SS50. You had to flick levers and all sorts to get the pedals working. Then your legs went at ten to the dozen to do about 3mph.

From memory, the "change" was in the legal definition of a moped....

It used to be something like "maximum of 50cc and equiped with pedals as a means of propulsion" - hence all the belt drives and proper pedals to get them moving.

The loophole was to build a 50cc bike and put pretend pedals on it, real pedals but both facing forwards to make footrests and not connected in any way to the rear wheel..... But, pull a few levers, engage a few cogs, and suddenly the engine was disconnected and you could pedal it.

Well, only if you could pedal really fast as pedalling as fast as you could would achieve about 2mph and a serious risk of falling off - but it satisfied the law at the time.

The change was all to do with speed limits and governors as I remember so a moped now doesn't need pedals but is speed restricted.

I always wondered if this was do-able with an AR80

Ive just been ordering a few bits so I can try and piece my X1 back together. Ive had it since I was 11, I took it for the mot just before I was 16 and they broke the kick start shaft, bummer....
