Was fooling around with horsepower vs. speed calculations. Using what I thought were the most reliable power/speed data points based on real observations, there was a very good curve fit to HP = (MPH^3)/11553. With this formula we can then extrapolate out to silly speeds.

No need to using rolling roads now other than for air/fuel setup. Just wind it up and see what she'll do, then apply the formula!

I expect to see the MiniWilliams 150MPH result any day now.

HP Speed Model
34 73 850 Mk 1
57 87 1275GT
90 101 MPI JC S Works
63 90 1.3 MPI
55 85 1961 998 Cooper
76 97 Cooper 1275S
29.69 70
44.32 80
63.1 90
86.56 100
115.21 110
131.64 115
149.57 120
190.17 130
237.51 140
292.13 150
354.54 160
425.26 170
504.8 180
593.7 190
692.46 200

Cheers, *smiley*

Formatting got gimped a bit. First six lines have power, observed speed, Mini model. Rest of the lines are HP/MPH pairs based on the formula.

Seems to fit my power of 155 Baldwin bananas at 120 mph. Doesnt diff ratio effect it though?

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Looks reasonable in places, my 998 tuebo with 90is bhp will get to 100 (based on rpm).

Makes me laugh when TMF member clain their stage 1'd 998s will do 100.

I have done all this a while ago. With similar results.

Much depends on getting the model right and assumes that you have max power at max speed so your gearing has to match. In reality this rarely happens. It is a good guide and shows how after about 80mph you need lots more power to go not much faster.

Warwick.

theres a thing, saying when you need to double your speed, you actualy need 4 times the power, the frictional resistances, air, road etc arent linear and such to over come is why you need more power than you would think, and isnt directly related to torque at all.
so it will be hard to actualy say what a top speed is with calculations as theres alot of different things to take into consideration

The formula estimates the power you need to be making at the target speed. Gearing will often mean that you cannot apply your peak power at the speed you want.

One other interesting point: Even with a 2.7 final drive, you would be at 9100RPM at 200MPH.

Double speed actually needs 8X the power - it's V-cubed, not V-squared. By fitting the data to some known measurements I think the extrapolations are better.

Have been considering running the standing mile at a place in Texas. Looks like I'll only get 100-110MPH with the current setup though. Funny in that at 85MPH it feels like it is accelerating well - just goes to show how the aero forces build quickly at higher speeds. Need good pistons, grey clutch, cross-pin diff, etc. so the boost can be properly wound up. Spendy project from where I am.

Note also that the power numbers fit to here are flywheel power, which explains I think why they are higher than Ben H's calculations.

Steve, you are truly amazing.

142 in a Mini must be way more exciting than 250 in a Veyron.

That seems about right, 4800 on 12s wit ha 3.1 is 87 (10s are almost the same size).

I guess mine is somewhere around 120mph. Seemed about that speed.
