Right chaps the mini finally passed its test today! Hurray!

However when ive come to tax it its saying there is a gap and the tax ran out 2006 and was not sorned and terminated the transactions (online), Ive had no reminders nothing to say the tax is due or anything. WTF im pretty sure i sorned it but it was that long since i can really remember.

The car has been off road and i have stacks of pics with time stamps to prove it.

Whats gunna happen? Am i gunna get sued to fuck or what?

iirc for me the first tax after its been sorned had to be at my main post office, however im sure it was before the whole online taxing thing kicked off, (about jan 06)

if it had not been sorned or taxed for any length of time i am sure yo would have had a letter or two with the whole "its all in the data base thing we will get you" adverts they used to have every where..

As far as DVLA are concerned, it is up to you to ensure that the car is either taxed or on SORN. This is printed on the V5 document. Basicaly you are responsable for the Tax/ SORN declaration for the vehicle and DVLA may or may not send you a reminder. Quite frankly they are abusing their own system, helping car owners to fall into this trap, as that is what it is. Gauranteed if your vehicle is taxed, they will send you a reminder when it is to be renewed. If its on SORN, they wont send you a reminder, but you still have to renew the SORN. You think the SORN is still valid and dont do anything until you retax it, bang they hit you with a fine. BAstards!!!

You need to renew the SORN every year as you would the tax.

I fell foul to this, and was not until I read something explaining what bastards the DVLA are, did I realise that even though I registered myself as the new keeper of a car that was already on SORN, that the SORN is not transferable, you have to declare it sorn as the new owner!!. To be honest, thats bollox as Tax is transferable, why isnt the SORN?

I was threatened with a fine for non taxation over 6 months. I have not had anything through yet on the fine, but I have had the SORN declaration through, so maybe I have been lucky, or DVLA are being evil bastards and just scare mongering, for the time being at least.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I came across that one a few years ago as well, who knows why it's like that?

Hmmm, I was silly enough to think you didn't need to renew your SORN. I never received a reminder so I thought I was in the clear, it's been SORNed a year, how long do they last? Better get that sorted!

I remember trying to do it when I got the car, but it didn't have a log book... Then the old pensioner memory kicked in!

Hi,
there's loads of problems with this system. I tried to sorn a car I had just bought as the tax had just ran out too.
I had my sorn application sent back saying I couldn't declare sorn as it wasn't in my name. They had the log book!
2 months later a fine of £80 landed or the doorstep. I ripped into them and they got very apologetic and now all is well.
Apparently they have updated their system to prevent this happening again, believe that at your own risk!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Then DVLA are not even consistent....

I have three "projects" SORN'd and I DO get the reminder every year without fail, in fact one arrived this morning !!!

I then SORN them online at the website, get a print confirmation from the website and they send me a SORN certificate in the post....

Just in case they "forget" to send a reminder, I have the calender marked for the respective months because, as said above, it HAS to be renewed yearly, and you can't rely on the reminder.

However I have one other "project" that has never been SORN'd and apparently never will..... when the whole thing first started I wrote to them and asked why they wanted me to SORN three vehicles and not the fourth (all off road for restoration) and they said it was because it was last taxed before e certain date (can't remember what) so wasn't on their database !!!

The knock-on effect was that when the new style logbooks were issued, I never got one for project number 4.

So I had to write to them again - they updated the database and issued a new logbook but still said it doesn't have to be SORN'd (until I start using it again).

Needless to say, I have kept that letter somewhere very safe.

But to answer the original question, unless things have changed recently, it starts with them issueing a demand for £40 (I know because I was late doing it once) and the letter says it will then be £80, then prosecution.

Even the £40 letter is full of weasle words such that if you SORN it immediately they won't necissarily actually charge you the £40.

But if you haven't even had the £40 warning, I don't see how they can go any higher....

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
