I have recently bought a turbo from a friend, who thought it was a T2, but I've just looked at it and its an IHI turbo with these numbers on it:

IHI turbo
Spec: VI72 9403
RHB4: 03539D
Parts: 8970372300

Does anyone know what its from, and whether its any good for a mini? It does look small and compact.

Thanks,

James.

A very quick Google suggests it's from an early 90's Vauxhall 1.7 diesel.

I'm not familiar with the IHI range - others on here are - but it depends on its ARs and map.

I did my own search earlier and someone was using a RHB4 on a 1.2 cinquichento and said it was maxed out at 160hp at 1 bar boost?

Hi,
As stated above it's down to ARs and the compressor map. Was the Cinqi turbo the same AR as yours?
The AR, to use a very basic analogy, is how the turbo is "geared" to the engine. A really small AR will spin the turbo up really quick but restrict the maximum exhaust flow and restrict the engine. Too big an AR will never spin the turbo up but won't restrict flow.
Obviously you need a balance between the two.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Oh thanks, I didn't understand what AR was untill you explained that, thanks. How do you know what the AR is of the turbo please? He did not state what the AR was on the cinqi turbo. Thanks, James.

The ARs of the exhaust housing and compressor housing would normally be stamped or cast in the respective housings.

That's certainly the way Garrett do it but, like I said, I'm not familiar with the IHI range - maybe they mark them differently ???

Thanks. I seem to remember seeing some numbers stamped on the housings, I'll have a look. I may be able to get some pics up too if I can find my camera leads.
