Now then gents.

A friend has a peugeot 306 1.9 TDI with electric front windows. When he was given it the passenger side front window won't go down. Upon investigating, pressing the 'UP' switch makes the window go up, and if the wires are reversed on the motor, pressing the 'UP' switch makes it go down.

I presume from this that the motor isn't the problem. I've replaced both the passenger door switch and the drivers side door switch. I've also replaced the window motor and guide assembly. The fuse and relay are both working fine.

My friend doesn't have a Haynes manual, and is reluctant to buy one as he isn't planning on keeping the car. Consequently i don't have a wiring diagram.

Anybody got any experience of peugeot's in particular with the window electrics?

from the fact that the window goes down when you swap the wires over you can rule out the wiring on both sides, also the motor.

I take it the window doesnt work from the drivers switch pod either?

It does sound like the switch but you say you have changed them. Were they changed for known working units?

How many wires have you got at the switches? you should have

Positive feed.

Down output.

Up Output.

With the switch out of the door card, check that you get power at all of these point with the switches in the respective postions. IGN on obviously.

if you dont get live at the down output wire with the switch in the correct position then you have something wrong with the switch.

you can take the switch apart as they often buld up with crap and cause high resistance but do this over a white bowl, and be carefull!! take note of where things go, there is a small ball bearing in these switches and they tend to go missing.

Failing the switches. you need to start doing continuity checks on the cuircuit. I wouldnt have thought that it will have a wiring problem as the motor works with the wires swapped on the switch.

Does the window go up with the wires swapped?

Hi,
Most common fault on these is the wiring breaks between the door and the A post.
There are no repair parts available from Peugeot (the last time I asked) so you'll have to mend as best you can, or leave well alone....
Cheers,
Gavin :)

BAT has got it in one, most likely its the wiring from drivers door to a post. You can cut it back and solder it up but its fiddly and needs the door off to do it.

Thanks guys,

I've managed to get hold of a wiring diagram, and looking at it, it appears that if any 1 out of 4 of the 5 wires connected to the drivers door switch has become disconnected, this could cause the problem i have of the window only working one way, yet working opposite if the wires are switched.

looking on the car, it seems that as suggested the most likely cause of any discontinuity will be the plastic 'push & screw' plug connector on either of the door/A panel connection points.

I'll investigate these and get back.

Cheers

Hi,
It's rarely the plug and socket, the wires that get bend every time the door is opened and closed are what fail.
They filled the back of the plug with glue to stop the water getting in. It also makes it unrepairable!

Ditto. The plug and socket are actually very good. This is VERY VERY common and the wires are the problem.

Well, the level of knowledge and experience on this forum never ceases to amaze!

Bat and Tom were spot on here.

I opened up the rubber protectors on both sides of the car between door and a post, and found a complete mess inside both.

It really did look as though someone had been at the wires with a knife or something.

Cheers for the help guys.
