Hi
I have a tuned turbo metro lump in a mini...I also have a (beginners?) question...

Distributor less ignition....
Good idea?
Advantages over stock set up?
What kit do I need?
Approx how much?

Be gentle........I'm on a learning curve

i'll just add that although the kit dave is running is expensive it is actually a pretty serious bit of kit, if you can afford it then go for it

Is megasquirt the EFI?

I read something about megajolt junior, which is a magic box which allows you to 3D map your ignition from a laptop, using Ford Sierra gubbins. It runs out at about £60 (yeah right!) and is apparantly very good......

I might have to run it as I am strapping my blower to the front of the engine.

I know nothing about mapping ignition at all but being not into drag racing/on a budget, this looks like a goodun.IMO

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

the mega squirt ecu is for injection but if you mod it slightly you can use it to run ignition using ford components, its like the mega jolt i think but its been around longer and has less bugs in it
i think

dan how much is the megasquirt and edis, and where are you getting it from? the only person ive found in this country that deals with them is bill shervington. also, isnt megasquirt and edis a bit of an overkill when your not going to inject? wouldnt you be better off using a megajolt kit, or are there a lot of unresolved bugs that mean its not a good idea?

ive done a bit of research intot he whole megajolt lite jr kit and i will probably order one soon, have got almost all of thhe edis bits now, (bargin, £0!) so really need t get my act together and order the kit!!

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

i have ordered my kit from the states, you just need to go to the bank and get a money order and send it over, i have only ordered the ecu, i'll get the resistors etc from maplins or somthing, i am going for megasquirt n edis simply because i know ben h has it running in his car and its proven to work but i'm sure there's other reasons why you should choose it over the mega jolt, ben h might know more though?
the ecu including my bank charges for the money order came to about £45 so its a bargain!
i think you can get set up and running for less than £150 which is really good.
if you check the megasquirt website there is so much info, just read and decide what you want

I have little experiance of the megajolt, but as has already been mentioned the megasquirt&edis has ben around ages and has most of the bugs fixed. It works exactly the same as the mega jolt.

I got stung for the postage and tax when I ordered the parts from Digikey so next time I am going to maplin, farnell or RS. It is a vey easy build and comes in t about £100 depending on how much the EDIS costs. Last week I went to the scrapyard and got 1 HIF38, 2 alternators, 1 sony stereo, 7 vr sensors (for the timing wheel) 3 timing wheels, 3 edis modules, 3 coil packs and a set of injectors (pluss all the fuses and relays I could fit in my bag) all for £60. All in all a bargin.

If you are in the leicester area feel free to come and have a demostration, although i am in Brazil for a month.

Advantages...

Well, if it wasn't any better, it wouldn't have been invented! LOL!

Results speak for themselves - all i can say is i'm confident that my mini would not perform as well as it does on the 1/4 without mapped ignition.
Only prob with these 'cheaper' kits (not meaning any offence anyone please!) is that finding a decent RR operator who is willing to spend time learning the 'software' and mapping it properly in 3d format is difficult. There are many decent (but also a lot of bad!) RR operators who choose and use whichever brand of 3D ECU they prefer.
Given how dangerous it is to run a turbo engine with the wrong advance, I took the easy, tried and tested route.
Now that i have more experience, i would probably like to have a tinker with megasquirt - but i suspect it will take a lot longer to get the same result than compared to using DTA for example.

No offence taken. Megasquirt has been around for long enough now for it not to be seen as cheep, but rather good value. The software used to tune it is much like any others I have seen and any tuner that has used one before will have no problem using it. In fact i would say it is extreamly easy to use because it has been designed and modified after lots of people have given feedback on how it operates.

It is still not the best out there, but pound for pound I don't see what advantage the more expensive units have. Sometime soon there will be a megasquirt 2 released and this promises even more for the same price.

I'm obviously going off what i found out about megasquirt a few years ago then... Can you program it via a laptop using a 256 cell display (or somet similar)?

Yep it is all through a laptop with a serial link and looks like many other systems, working in a windows environment. Infact we have recently had the tuning working through a palm pilot which can double up as a dashboard.

It really is a good value for money system.
