Bonjour,

Just want to check that ive wired my inertia solenoid correctly?

Got the +ve from the battery and 2 of the brown wires from the ignition/alternator going to one lug.

The red/white signal going to one spade.

The brown/red (which im not sure whats for) to the big spade

And the feed to the starter on the other lug.

Is this correct? What are the other spade terminals for?

Also, people with flip fronts and inertia solenoids, where do you mount them? I guess they have to be earthed, can one of the spade terminals be used as an earth?

Ta muchly.

The start signal wire needs to go to the spades in the centre of the solenoid between the two studs. You do need to earth it and this needs to be done via the metal bracket.

Thanks guys!

Tom, cheers for pointing that out! I'm unsure what the other two spades are for but the red/white is now between the two lugs, cheers!

Joey - ta for the link, dunno if its just me but the pics dont seem to work!

I think its all sussed now anywho, i've mounted the solenoid down on the front subframe in the corner by the wok, will need to tweak the wire lengths to make it neater but its ptetty much there, thanks :)

Be advised not all solenoids earth through the bracket.

The reason there are two small tags between the big studs/lugs is that one is the coil that energises the solenoid (ie, start signal) and the other is the ballast bypass for ballast ignition systems.

Not all solenoids have the second tag (as some are for non-ballast systems only) but if there are two, you have to pick the right one for the start signal.

Easiest way is a DVM set to Ohms (or continuity), the start connector will have a few ohms (solenoid coil resistance) between it and the backplate (earth) whereas the ballast bypass tag will be infinity to earth with the solenoid de-energised.

Brilliant thats nice to know as I would have been stumped if it didnt work otherwise.

Thanks alot Rod, i'll bear that in mind!!

Josh - I take it the final spade terminal alongside the stud/lug would be for the earth, if its not through the body of the solenoid?

Its been a While since I set eyes on one but I f memory serves The wire of the back of the coil ran to the body or onto the bracket.

I see! I'm fitting megajolt will this have an effect on any of it?

I've got some wires coming out the same bit of loom that went to the dizzy when it was there so I guess I can take them out.

I've earthed the solenoid on the subframe via the mounting bracket so i'll just have to see how it goes I guess!

If using MJ, the ballast tag is irrelevant - that would have been the bit of wiring that went to the "dizzy" (actually to the coil but close enough :) )

All the one's I've used have the baseplate/bracket as earth, just confirm it with a DVM when you check which is the coil/solenoid small tag. If you get a low ohms between one tag and backplate, backplate is earth.

Otherwise, no issues so long as all your high current tags are clean and secure.

Great! I'll get the rest up together and hopefully have no issues starting the thing (fingers crossed!)

At least if I do have any issues i'll have some possible causes to look at.

Cheers guys.
