I normally insist on wearing a boiler suite whilst welding however recently it's just been too hot, so I thought I'd have a go at welding in a T Shirt like the Americans do on the telly. Anyway the first time I tried it I came away with slightly sun burnt arms, which is definitely not a good thing. So today I put some SPF 50 sun block on, no skin cancers for me thank you, however it seems the dust from grinding sticks to sunblock quite well so now I look like I've been living in a coal mine.

I was welding in a t-shirt the other day aswell. Its a wierd little patch of sunburn that i couldnt understand the next day, The little bit of exposed skin between in the gauntlet and the t-shirt that gets sunburnt is a hard one to work out if your not thinking straight!

I cut off my inner wings and sills last weekend, chopped out all the bits off rust, cleaned everything up, welded on the new panels, seam sealed, stonechipped and then tetra Schutz'd the under neath.......should have seen the state of me!!!!!!

My best one was a few years ago, having to weld in a totally inaccessible area (different car) where I couldn't wear the mask/visor at all as it fouled on all the surrounding bits.... so I did what I'd seen the coded welders at work do before for tricky bits and just used the little rectagular coloured glass in front of my eyes.

A couple of days later, a perfect tan on my face apart from a nearly perfect rectangular white shape around my eyes !!!

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I always weld in a tee shirt, that's why all my tee shirts look like teabags *surprised*

Did the same a few times. Ended up with the skin peeling off at my elbow joint and around there.

Burnt the skin to a crisp !! was sore for days.

Did it a couple of times before I realised what had caused it.

When I first started with my TIG I burned my arms badly, I thought I was just playing but must have been at it for a while, I now wear long sleeves and gloves!

I think I'll have to pop over to Matalan and get some cheap long sleeve T-shirts for summer welding.

Still don't know how they get away with out getting badly sun burnt on American Chopper & the like.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

You need to turn the wire speed down. Shielding gas helps too *tongue*

I burned my face soo bad once i couldnt put my glasses on for 3 full days and had to stay off work (due to my face swelling up), 4th day started peeling, and 5th day looked like a leper, just coughing would cause big flakes to fall off....

never again!!

also for about 5 years afterwards i would burn really easy in the sun.

ialso tigs seem worse for causing burn, ithink because there is less smoke?

When I was In night school getting my welding cert. I remember coming home one night feeling rather flushed taught I just have a wash and go to bed, I did so woke up next morning late for work so no shave etc, when I got into work Sam on the desk nearly had a hart attack when I walked in. Turned out I had 2nd degree on 95% of my face and my lips where blue. Ended up in the burns unit of local hospital for a week and two skin grafts really not nice. Now I wont even tack with out a shield just not worth it.

95% of the time i weld in a T-shirt, jeans, builders gloves and a face mask.

the other 5% of the time i wear i big hefty coat because im lying under the car!

i used to get burnt loads when i first learn to weld, but now i think i'm more controlled, and prepare everything better, so i down get as many sparks (thats a guess for the reason).

Smart Guy!

mainland europe near ze germans

bloody large amount of UV.. (on a positive note: it is very anti viral..the continuous welder will be the last guy on the planet when the mexican flu goes bezerk :)) ) especialy when welding TIG.

I never burn in the sun (including high altitude) but still managed to get sore arms while holding some bits to be welded ( max 5 minutes total).

It is pretty evil.

so far studies show no extra risk for skin cancer in welders..because you tend to learn pretty quickly i guess :))

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system
