stoke-on-trent

I installed my new dash system yesterday. The rev counter and temp guages work well, but I have lost my indicators. they worked with the standard dash in place. Do I need to connect up the voltage stabiliser or bypass the hazard switch or something?

I was under the impression that the indicator bulbs were just little bulbs that flash, but obviously not because they are no longer working lol.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers gents

Stoke-on-Trent. Duck.

Uh-oh. I'm a bit worried by this Stefaz. I'm counting on electrical your help when I get round to Megajolting my Mini, lol!

From memory I think the hazards and indicators actually use different flasher units though? But if they worked previously I'm not sure why they wouldn't work now if you've picked up the "old dash" connections [wiring]?

Depends on the year.

You get power to the hazard switch and the stalks, the power gets pushed to either left, right or both sides depending on the position of the stalk and the hazard switch. The hazard switch is earthed by the flasher unit, either behind the clocks or under the bonnett.

That is unless you have a MK1, 2 or pre 76 clubman where there are no hazzards. They just work by witch craft!

EDIT: corrected earth bit... Might still be wrong though...

ok cool. i will double check its earthed properly tomorrow night or saturday. although the only thing I have changed is the wiring to the clocks.

Pottsy - don't worry mate the car runs sweet its just this has had me stumped all day and it's really irritating having godawful wiring diagrams to look at.

Dead easy to knock the earth loose. Did it myself when I had the dash out of my clubman.

Hi
Could be flasher unit by the brake pedal?
Could be hazzard switch as this interrupts the feed to the column switch.
Check you have an ignition feed on the green wire going to that flasher unit, then stick the test light in the other terminal and it should flash quickly.
Cheers

Righto I will grab a test light in a little bit and see. If I don't have a feed where is the first place I need to be looking?

Change the hazard switch.

The power for the indicators is supplied through the hazard switch. If you remove the hazard switch the indicators will not work.

If the copper contacts in the hazard switch foul up your indicators wont work

The stalks switch the earthing side of the indicator circuit but the power to the indicator stalks is switched in the hazard switch.

Change the hazard switch!

Yes you are correct because the hazzard circuit has to handle twice the current. Plus on switching on your hazzard lights you electicaly disconnect the power supply to the indicator stalks.

The hazzard switch is not earthed by the flasher unit! the flasher unit is between the hazzard switch and the fuse. the hazzard switch completes the circuit and the earth is completed through the light bulbs.
