Thought i'd chuck these up on here as you can never have too many build diaries going. Plus I haven't got one for my new gayfair.


Introducing the first one.


This is my vauxhall turbo engineed space frame mini. Homebrewed and taking far too long!

These pics aren't up to date btw.














The basic spec is:


SHELL

- Homebrewed space frame.
- GRP: front end (with a panels), bonnet, roof, doors, rear quarters and bootlid.
- Homemade tubular front subframe in boot.
- Both subframes modified to allow much lower suspension travel.


ENGINE

- Turbo Technics converted Astra GTE engine.
Rest is still awaiting modification.


SUSPENSION

Front

- Spax coilovers mounted off space frame.
- Adjustable lower arms.
- Adjustable tie rods.

Rear

- Metro hubs.
- Left and right hand threaded steering locks for easy track adjustment.
- Standard bottom arms.
- Adjustable tie rods.
- Left and right hand threaded drop links for shocks.
- Inboard "push rod" style shock absorbers mounted to space frame.

BRAKES

- Undecided on the front, but looking at the KAD 6 pots.
- Rear has modified alfa gtv rear calipers and 7.9" discs.
- Homemade twin master cylinder pedal box conversion.


Oh, it's got a set of pornographic 7x10 Force splits

Now for our next contestant...


Not going to be as elaborate as the other one, and I don't have any pics to hand.


Basically it's a 1983 Gayfair which I bought 'cos I was tired of driving a boring car around.

Decided to give it a fresh coat of paint but ended up uncovering a bit more than I bargained for .

We got it into my mates garage (who is currently painting it). There was a small patch of rot under one of the boot hinges...so decided to clean it back and ended up chasing it back a bit further than I planned lol.

To cut a long story short, we dropped the rear frame as the o/s bit of the floor where the rear mount is was completely rotten. 2 days solid welding later and I had made half a boot floor from a MG midget wing, new hinge panel fitted, new rear valance fitted, new steel let in under both lights.

What the previous tw*t had done was cut steel patches and fibreglasses them in, not even cutting out the previous rot!!!!!! Then filling the gaps!!!!!!!!! Much frustration ensued!

Anywho, after all the welding was done, I left my mate to it and it should be in a coat of paint by end of the weekend! *fingers crossed*.

It only has a 998 at the mo, but I am picking up a 1460 motor at the end of the month which I am going to mod with a 998 cam and various other bits in a bid to make a low down torque monster

Popped round my mates earlier to see how he's getting on with the gayfair...


WOW!

I will emphasise the pics do not do it any justice. THe rear is just as shiny as the front in the flesh, and he's still got more coats to put on. A very happy me at the moment! lol.

Top paint work!

Cheers chaps! The shout out goes to my mate George who's doing the paint work!


Looking at getting hold of a scrap head as i've got some ideas for multi point injection and I wanna try them out.


Speaking of which has anyone got any pics of a cut head?

Well I had a look at some head cut away pics and the MPi idea is scrap. So now I am definitely going down the turbo road .



Still on the look out for a mk 1 grille and some black door handles but it's getting close.

I should be picking the engine up tomorrow. Will get some pics when it arrives!

Your car is looking very nice, but that exhaust is gay!

Urg, I may be changing it anyways as it's a wee bit loud. I reckon it will still look better with the new arches and wider wheels???


Anywho, picked up the motor last night. Haven't got any pics yet as it's still stuffed in the back of my car.

I will be stripping it down over the weekend and selling off the bits I don't need.


I'm a bit miffed by the engine code however, where the engine code usually is, it is embossed:

"BMC 001"

Any clues?

(Verniers are reading a little under 86mm and 73.5mm but there is a bit of carbon build up on the crowns and at top of the bores).














The head off it has just paid for my spazframe one to be painted 8-)

deffo get shot of the barryboy zausts matey, but otherwise looking nice.

i had a stainless play mini zaust on my old yellow mini got an rc40 on me mpi but much prefer the tidy look of the play mini

..I think if you build your own engine you can call it whatever you want, so prehaps thats what the geezer before you did?
