Forgive me if this has been posted before, but I have run a search and didn't find the answers I was looking for.

Basically I am looking for a small turbo that will be on almost full boost at 1,500 rpm and tail out around 5,000 rpm.

The engine in question is a 1460.

I am not bothered about horsepower but I'm trying to get a big low down torque figure as it's for my daily drive.

If I'm honest, my friend has an L200 pick up and the low down grunt off it is amazing (don't have to wait for anything, it's just there straight away) and I want something similar in the mini.

Apologies if i'm being stupid, but any thoughts would be great. What would need lots of attention etc.

BTW, if boost tails off around 5,000rpm the engine will never see more than this.

Cheers in advance guys!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

for a 1460 you'll get away with something fairly large.

normally for a smaller bore i would suggest a gt15 but think it would strangle this, maybe a gt17 would be better.

I also have an l200 and the torque is all off boost, when it comes on boost it then kicks hard! its the 170bhp animal DID i have.

Yea that's the one! It's an animal (excuse the pun).

If I could get the same "effect" in the mini (obviously less power) would be great. Won't really be wanting power over about 5,000 rpm like I said. As long as the power is there really early I will be happy.

Been reading through vizards book, but alot of it seems to be focusing on mid range and upwards power. I can't find much on low end... :S

Turbo Tel used a GT1548 on his 1293. As far as I remember, he was running 10PSI boost. He has some relevant stuff which would be worth reading. I think his max boost occured alot later than you are looking for though. 1500RPM does seem very low, I've never seen anybody achieve maximum boost near that before.
I am using a GT1544S on my ~1150cc motor. Nothing to report yet as I haven't got it running but I'm right in the centre of the peak efficiency island at 0.7 - 0.8 bar

There is a nice IHI RHF4 turbo in the for sale section that would be ideal for this *happy* *wink* *tongue*

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Sounds like a job for a bini blower, if you ask me.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Dragging up an old post here, but what cam would be ideal for this application? bear in mind the motor won't be going over 6,000 rpm and I'd be after the widest torque curve possible.

Would be with a IHI RHF4 turbo.

Cheers,

Owen.

I know the t2 5 turbo si spooling at almost past idling,
but it will not give full boost at 1500. then it'll still be highly drivablen and will decline after 5000 rpm,
so could be a good one for your engine.

Cam wise I'm sure the best one is the mg n/a mety one, if you want more low down, certainly a sw5 could be the match but,I'm not sure it will not have enough exhaust to let these hot gas outing freely.

Gussing about turbo the audi s4 biturbo have 2700 cc and one turbo on each bank, making one turbo for 1350cc and it'll give full boost at 1800 rpm, then right up to 6500 rpm with a flow at about 140 bhp by turbo..;

cam wise id use the softest emissions cam you can find in the piper or kent book.

I don't think you can get full boost at 1500 on such an old designed engine head. Even on modern petrol engines it's quite hard. Combustion is not very stable at that RPM, not to mention the oil pressure that could be too low to properly lubricate crank bearings.
Have a look at Kei Car 660cc engine turbos. They seem to be quite efficient but fragile as they spin at > 200k.
What about a twin turbo setup ? :) .
