hi, im rebuilding a fast road engine for my mpi cooper.

i will be using an a series gearbox (1275 gt close ratio), with a few additions, such as change of final drive, centre oil pickup, hardened diff pin etc

i started to strip the gearbox down tonight, as the 1st motion bearing race has broken.

things were going fine, until the time came to remove the 1st motion shaft and bearing.

according to haynes metro manual, the nut retaining the transfer gear has to be removed, then put back on once the transfer gear has been removed. then the shaft is to be extracted complete with bearing by using pullers on the nut.

this is fine in principle, but the shaft wont budge. my puller set are decent enough (from frost), one of the pullers binded the thread before anything moved.

i dont really want to take the main shaft out if i can help it, nightmare with detent balls etc.

does anyone know or have any tips on removal of the 1st motion bearing and the shaft?

any help much apreciated

thanks

have you removed the laygear?

I'm sure the lay gear needs to come out befor the 1st motion gear can come out.

if you have a spare nut you can veld a bit of 1" box to it, an M10 nut to the other end, screw some studding in and turn it into a slide hammer.

Should come out ok then,

I find that hammering works better than pullers for stuff like this,

Also it may be worth warming the case a bit, as its ally it should expand around the beararing, try that with the puller on it.

How were you using a puller, ie, against what ???

If the bearing is tight in the casing I usually tap it from the other side on the outer race with a brass drift and (as already said) heat the casing if it's really tight.

I can't visualise how you could use a puller....

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Thats a good point.. A conventional puller would just be trying to rip the nose bearing off the shaft..

stowmaket suffolk

the best way is a long punch on the top part of the outer race, but you must also give the tail of the shaft a tap so it comes out square. other wise you will be trying to make the hole bigger and you dont want that.

but normally a easy bearing to get out

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

That guessworks guy is clearly a very helpfull type, posting useful guides and the like, but he sure doesn't like cleaning stuff very well before re-assembling it.

Anyways, the BEST tool for the job is a slide hammer - no exceptions.

Here is a post showing how you can easilly make one:
