I've been doing a bit of searching on water pumps but there's never really a definative answere on these.

I need to buy one for my car and I'm just thinking with the radiator in the boot I'm going to need one that has a bit of power behind it to get the water all the extra distance, but what one should I get.

from what I can find the options are

Davis craig = high flowing but expensive and can fail

kad = good but expensive for what it is

Bosch = sesible price and good flow but hard to find the right one

Renult /Scrap heap challenge = dirt cheap but probably won't flow enough

has anyone got any ideas for what I need.

None of the above. The Meziere WP136S. Flow rate of 78 litres/min. It has a hell of alot more flow capacity thatn any other the other pumps and seemingly better reliability than the davis craig.

Matty is running one and his experiences convinced me to get one too. I ordered it from Sumit Racing in the US. It arrived in 3 days!

TurboDave was looking at BMW pumps. They were brushless motors though so a normal water pump controller would make shite of them as far as I know.

It's hard to determine what flow rate you need but the KAD which flows 19l/min is intended as a suplimentary pump for race cars where they don't have to deal with traffic. Obviously it's hard to characterise the flow rate of the standard pump as it varies with engine speed.

Shiping was $40 odd. I had to pay VAT aswell. Including two -12AN 32mm adapters, shipping, VAT and the pump it cose me €250 ish

I've tried to look for those on eBay. I seem to remember him saying it was very similar to the kad one at a much better price.

Slightly OT: are there external waterpumps which are mechanicly (=belt) driven?

Jim Whats turbo daves handle? i currently run a craig david but im still having problems... might see what his pump is like!

Current set up is alloy rad(same as flan) swirl pot etc but on saturday still saw 85c( and it was cold and wet is always at 90 on normal days and the power does drop off) before the head gasket let go again but did last an hour and a half which is the same as 3 race meetings so can complain etc.. changing to metal head gasket next season and maybe a higher speed pump i use an 80 litre one at the min...

It's really subtle, but if you study the above pictures closely, you can just about see the differences between the two.

Just to re-affirm, the BMW pumps I was looking at - I've killed two of them trying to tinker with controlling them.

The ones I have been selling were different than this. I'm going to try one more beemer pump before giving up with them, or modifying them to be a regular brushed motor setup.

I think that solution is a good flow, but also a restriction to ensure some pressure in the head to raise the local boiling point.

A conventional thermostat would be just right.

You just need to be wary of a pump that craps out and drops to 10% of it's flow with the slightest pressure will not get you far. The very small 'booster' pumps do not have a good performance once they meet a pressure.

Im running a shuttle type thermostat and the temps accross my head seem to be very close end to end, within 2-3 degrees at all times.

I was under the impression the electric pumps don't like restrictions. *oh well*

Same here. That's why I'm ditching the thermostat and I got a pump controller

TurboDave what would be your thoughts about a car with a rear radiator.

would the extra length of pipe work cause a problem?

I've no experience with rear rads - but this should be a last resort after trying EVERYTHING else.... Carl Austin is the only one with a rear rad I believe...
