Hello from the states. Another newbie ...I have been a lurker for awhile, but I am getting closer to needing some help, so I am here because this site seems to have the most information on mapped ignition and fuel injection. I may never turbo an engine, but I am working my way towards that end. I have an MPi Mini and my wife has a Traveller.

I picked up a spare MPi engine or two for spares and thought that I should make use of one of them in the Traveller when it comes time to replace or rebuild. I would like to do this in stages as there are a number of issues with putting an MPi block into a older car. The first stage is using it with carbs and mapped ignition and then move on to injecting it. But one step at a time.

I was ready to buy a Megajolt as they turn up cheap over here every now and again, but after reading and rereading some of the threads, it seems it might make sense to try to use Megasquirt for ignition only as a start, then again some posts indicate that is not so easy.

If I can figure out where to post questions properly you will see some questions from me soon. I am trying to sort out what the new versions of squirt and jolt mean and when they will be available.

Terry

I am in California in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I got my first Mini ride in Wokingham along time ago.

First, welcome !!!

But not sure where you've read that....... Megasquirt does ignition basically the same as MegaJolt, except better as you can fire the coilpack direct (if it's built right) and do away with the EDIS module. And you have all the other MS2 features that MJ doesn't have and the ability to upgrade to injection later.

Rod I would love to do away with the EDIS and use as many MPi components as possible, but it would be more expensive. Is this type of question appropriate for:
A-Series EFI / Injection :: Aftermarket injection for the A-Series

Terry,

Yes, post any detailed questions in the Injection part of the forum....

It was just surprising (to me anyway) that you had read somewhere that MS couldn't be as good as MJ. And if you're starting with an MPI engine/parts anyway, you have a lot of what's needed for mapped ignition or injection (beyond what the MPI (MEMS) can do for you anyway).

Anyway, welcome again.....

Terry.

Welcome to TM.

I use a Megasquirt MS1 Extra with a V3 Board in my van for wasted spark coilpack ignition only, without all that EDIS stuff.

Bought the unit from Phil Ringwood here in the UK at:

www.ExtraEFi.co.uk

but there are loadsa outlets in the US for the ECU kit.

As well as outputs for the coilpack, mine uses the standard Rover (Elmwood) brown coolant and green air inlet temp sensors to provide me with an output for a tacho, cooling fan control, knock sensor input, turbo water injection pump and water injection injector control. I'm using a Throttle Position Switch input and MAP sensor.

The 3D ignition mapping and Data Logging features are first class and there are so many people willing to assist in resolving install problems.

Plus if you do decide to go with injection later on, and bin the carb, the wires and software are already there to control the idle valve and injectors.

It's got to be one of the best moves I made with the van, nuff said.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Thanks for the great responses. I bought a trigger wheel already, but I suppose I can use it as an alternative if I need to.
