I have a fairly old set of spax gas adjustables on my mini and I am not sure if they are the older 14 click adjusters or the newer 28 click versions.

They have the screw type adjusters not the knob type.

to set them up you turn the adjuster anticlockwise until the adjuster stops, this is the min setting. Then you screw the adjuter clockwise to increase the damping.

I understand you need to count the clicks, as once the maximum damping has been reached, the adjuster will keep turning / clicking, hence I can't tell if they are 14's and 28's.

Does anybody know if the adjuster type knob or screw indicates if they are 14 or 28 click types ?

Cheers

Can you not just work it out? Put them all on 7 go for a drive. The up to 14 and go for a drive. then up to 28 and go for a drive. If they are 14 clicks the last drive will make no difference, if they are 28 clicks then the last drive you will feel the difference.

This got me thinking as I bought mine secondhand and they are the older style.

Try this - start at minimum where there is a hard stop. wind up 28 clicks or more then wind backwards to the hard stop counting... that should be your answer.

Just tried it on mine and I only got 14 clicks backards no matter how many I wound forward.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Thanks Rod, I'll try that on my set tomorrow. That's lateral thinking.

Thanks Guys,

Good thinking.

Problem solved,

Now the only question is set up...

Whats the best place to start, 2/3 front 1/3 rear ?

Its on 13's so don't want to be too stiff, as I do drive on the road.

Car is about 560kgs dry

If you listen carefully, when you get to max adjustment, you will hear a slightly different "click" as the mechanism ratchets round to stop you being able to wind them in too far and bugger them up.

As for settings, 2/3 fr 1/3 rr sounds a reasonable starting point to me. Obviously the whole idea is that you can bugger about with them to your hearts content!

Not jumping on a post, but anyone used Spax for reconditioning work? Emailed them to do my Traxspax, seem quite helpful.
