ive been a good boy and done plenty of searching on the forum to see if i can get some info on wideband AFR set ups.
found alot of info regarding the best ones to get etc but my question is this..

i can pick up an AFR gauge for £40 and a semi decent universal O2 sensor for about £20...a wideband set up im looking at atleast £130 dependant on spec etc.

just wanted to know what benefits the full wideband system would have over knocking up my own cheap system.. are the uni 02 sensors not alot of good(accurate etc )..

baring in mind im running not too far off standard spec etc, and altho future plans will see me pushing for more power and upgrades money is abit tight at the minute, but i want a way to monitor my AFR to help me get a better set up engine.

thanks in advance

google for the difference between narrow band (what you describe, universal sensor+gauge) and a true wideband.

narrowbands won't give the resolution or speed of response that a wideband will give.

think of it as an investment, i have put a ciggy socket adapter on my wideband, so can just bolt into any car to see what the afr's are like, its one handy mofo!

good point well made..ill think of it more as a long term mod that can stay with the car regardless of what spec it gets to...itll always be very handy.

That's exactly what we've done with John's in the van. The sensor wire just pops down through the gear selector hole and along the top bar. Defo worth doing, we where quite lean...

thanks for the info rob.. ive gven it a good read and have decided ot go for a decent wideband system just to make sure i get something that works to its fullest.

im looking at gettign this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wideband-Lambda-Air-...=item19baf76cc0

i like the idea of having both a numerical reading and a light indication aswell... it looks like a decent system even if not the most attractive looking gauge ever

Never used that gauge before but it looks cheap and crap to me. Spend an extra few quid on one of these.

Ben.

AEM UEGO Wideband is what I'm using, as are plenty others including John and Andy on the van. However, the Innovate kit also seens to be popular.

Well worth it. Plus it'll give you an output to a Data Logger, Megasquirt or Megajolt etc.

You will not regret buying a Wideband.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Ben.

Here's my early dash install phots taking shape with the AEM Wideband and the black bezel it came with from Funky Products.

I didn't like the look of that so decided to modify it, and the boost gauge, to Smiths bezels to match my other instruments. Unpicking the bezel without mullering a £200 gauge was an experience not to be repeated ! But worth it IMO. And a great piece of kit.

If you need a hand fitting, give me a call. It really is a piece o piss, just follow the instructions to wire it up and make sure you weld your bung (ooh ahh) into the downpipe at the right angle to drain off and prevent condensate build up affecting the sensor (I think the sensor angle needs to be 10 degrees off the horizontal pointing downwards). I fitted mine just before the bend in the downpipe, about 10 inches from the clamp.

Richard.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

BTW bman. Glad you bought the AEM. You won't be disappointed.

I've bought cheap gauges in the past expecting them to be ok, only for when the arrive to be bloody horrid!

I especially wouldn't scrimp on somthing like wideband as if its wrong it could cost you an engine.

No doubts the van's motor would have been very poorly by now if we didn't have one.

Aim for 15:1 on idle and depending on boost, down to around 12:1 full chat

It was a piece of cake to fit. Screw the lambda into the bung in the exhaust, run the wires into the cab. connect 12v and earth onto the gauges loom, connect the big multiplug on the probe's loom, plug the two plugs onto the gauge and you're away. If you're being picky you could mount the gauge in a pod or something.
