Mine took 3 of us to get it off. I think the box had been rebuilt by a gorilla!

I stuck the socket on with a big bar on the end of it then pushed the engine over. Came loose after a fight.
And to put it back i pushed it the other way. But this was a built up engine and its only a temporary fix til i build a new engine.

The way I get my pinions off (oohh arrgh), is to put a 2 ft piece of 3x2 wood through the open diff housing and then put the diff cover on and tighten the bolts over the wood (obviously without the diff or side covers fitted !).

Then, I lift the box up onto the bench with the wood sticking out and clamp it tight as f..k in the jaws of my worktop mounted vice.

The box is then swivelled over on the wood so the box is hanging off the side of the bench, you can then just undo the pinion nut easy peazy as all the torque resisting your untightenning is taken by the wood through the vice, into the workbench.

To do it back up, just swivel the box back up onto the bench and tighten the blighter up to 150lbft.

Has worked every time for me in the last 22 years of building Mini gearboxes.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Thanks guys,

I think the first one I did, I took the box to my mates mechanics garage and we ended up putting the box up side down on the floor, (clean painted floor of course) and got a big hairy biker (20st+) to stand on it, while we got the big torque wrench on it...:)

BTW - I took my buddy VTEC Pete out for a spin this weekend, and even though I am running her in, he gave it a name, the "Brocket"...cause I'm a brocket maaannn, nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah....
