Recently I have not been able to get oil pressure on cold start up, until I prime the oil pump by pouring oil down the oil cooler hole in the block and pushing the car back wards in 4th (as per Turbo daves trick).

After this the car runs fine and intial presure is 50-60psi on tick over which drops to 20psi on tick over once the oil is fully upto temperature.

Then if I come back the next day, again no oil pressure, and this is even after cranking the engine, plugs out for several minutes!!

Engine is a 1275 A+ metro turbo, and oil pump and bearings have done less than 5000 miles.

The current summer ambient temperature here is between 90-100degrees F or 32-38 degrees C. because of this I am using 20-50 to try and keep the oil a little thicker in the heat.

Has anyone suffered from this?

My next step is to replace the relief valve plunger to make sure it is seating properly in an atempt to stop the oil running out of the pump over night, like holding your finger over the end of a drinking straw when you lift it out of a glass of water.

Failing this I think I will have to the pull the engine out and strip it down....as there are no real oil leaks.

There is plenty of oil in the engine.

Any advise would be greatly appriciated:)

BTW - I took my buddy VTEC Pete out for a spin this weekend, and even though I am running her in, he gave it a name, the "Brocket"...cause I'm a brocket maaannn, nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah....

our mate Andy Cameron has this problem; the car only gets used about once a year (if that!) and he simply primes it first - no idea what the cause is though or the solution i'm afraid

Thanks for the info,

Just to note, this is only a recent problem, and I am just wanting to check there isn't an obvious solution I'm missing, or if I just need to wait till autumn cooler, or if I need to replace the pump.

Does any one know of any acumulator systems on the market that might help? I know some turbo applications use them to ensure turbo bearing oil pressure on start up ?

Thanks Steve,

Your wisdom is appreciated :)

Sticking plunger would make sense,

New plunger should arrive on Wednesday,

If that doesn't work I will have to strip the motor, and probably fit new shells, pump and gasket as a matter of course...unless everything looks A1

Are the swiftune pumps any good? They seem reasonably priced?

O-ring was fitted although all the gaskets and copper washers seem to leak with the heat and I have nipped most things up.

If I do strip it I have a new central pick up to go in :)

Cheers

brocky, a standard STEEL backed pump is well up to the job around £12 ish from minispares north
also replace the oil filter first!!!! as well it may be partialy blocked and or collapsed internall and the oil pressure is low when hot causing problems

Thanks Brett and Steve,

Just inspected the relief valve spring and plunger,

Plunger has typical wear ring where it seats, but no scoring. No sign of any gunk or debris.

Spring measured 71.98mm relaxed, should be 72.63 according to haynes, so added a 0.6mm washer in the cap, re primmed oil, and gauge pressure looked to be a bit higher.

I guess I will see tomorrow if I can get pressure.....other wise out it comes, oil filter was just changed

I have a rover group conversion gasket set which has the oil pump gasket in so that should be the genuine item.

Thanks again for the advise guys :)

Quick update,

Adding the washer has done the trick, the oil light practically goes out straight away and pressure builds to a healthy 60 psi,

Steve, new spring on order:)

Does anyone rate the adjustable releif valve jobbies ?

Cheers
