There seem to be two types of Pot-joints out there. One bigger, and one smaller.

When did this change come, and what are the differences? Just the balls, or the entire thing?

Yes I have come across this in the past. The balls are the same I think, just the cage is bigger and the outer housing machined differently.

Not sure when or why they changed, I thought possibly the bigger ones had been re-manufactured to recon them hence new cage and inner race and remachine the outer?? But now I have seen that many of them in different cars that it must have been something BL/Rover did from the factory.

hey, never knew this! Wonder when it did happen - maybe when the metro was launched with its potent 63hp 1275 engine???

LOL!

I've just been out in the garage measuring pots.. There are indeed two different types. The difference I've noticed, is the size of the ring holding the balls. This is of a bigger diameter on the new ones resulting in that it does not enter old pots. I've taken some pictures but forgot my camera.... DOH!

Update shortly.

I haven't taken any measurements yet, but here are the differences:

One could clearly see the difference in size and shape on these two.

The difference on these, are that there is a slight 45 degree angle on the area between the balls on the "smaller" one.

I tried to see if there was a correlation between the wide and narrow gaiter recesses, but did not find any solution on this.

I do think that the balls are of the same diameter.

What we now need to know is when this change was made, or if it's just a Mini/Metro difference.

Digging this up as i have come across it today.

Went to fit my complete disk brake set up (including driveshafts from an 85 mini) to my drum braked estate (1978), and found the pot joints are a different size, which has messed me right up!

So when do we think this change over happend?

Is the small cage too small for the larger pot?
Ive seen different shaped cages before but not thought anything of it. I reckon I may even have used the wrong cage in the wrong pot

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I must say that now I know that the pot joint can be knocked off the shat without too much hassle, I keep them as a complete sealed unit, and don't pull them apart.

leeds/wakefield.

I wouldn't be surprised if the smaller joint uses inperial balls and the bigger are a leter upgrade to metric,

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
