I,ve stripped one turbo which had a damaged cold side impeller as a practice run -piece of cake -20 mins start to finish.

It has been suggested to me that the GT series is much more sensitive to balance issues than the old T series so it may not be OK just to mark the parts for re-assembly, but on a US forum it has been asserted that Garret stuff is all individually balanced so there should be no problem?.

Anyone successfully rebuilt a GT 1732 on here ?

How much radial play is acceptable before its U/S ? there is no axial play at all. Will the pressurised oil supply eliminate the slight play I am looking at ?

Dont want to rip it apart if I dont need to.

It'll need to be balanced properly by a good one at high revs, failing at this and it'll delate spooling, be noisy, and will self destruct shortly.

Yes, I did mean 1752 -sorry.

There appears to be diametrically opposed views on this balance issue.

Maybe I,ll speak to Robert -or wait until he notices this thread and lets us all have his view.

I always thought that turbines were balanced for themselves and copmpressors as well. Are they really balanced toghether?

This is what I am drawn to believe.
If the turbine is balanced and an integral part of the shaft, nothing needs doing in that direction. The compressor wheel must be in balance when fitted to the shaft, so as long as it is re-fitted to the same shaft in the same orientation it should still be in balance ?

Anyone volunteer how much play is acceptable before I rip the second one apart, please ?.

here i am !!lol

i took my original one apart ,and fitted new rings ,then ran it for about 2 years , i had not marked it and just wanged it back together ..it was fine .. after 2 years i noticed it was just starting to scuff the inlet wheel on the housing , about 2.5 thou was worn off ,so i took it off and replaced it with another which i had also taken apart ,but had marked .

its been fine since then .the other one i replaced all bushes and rings ,and its fine , so ill keep it for a while then sell it as fine but not rebalanced .
niether turbo ever made any noise..BOTH FUNCTIONED WELL.

play in the shaft ...id expect about half the space from the wheel to the side david ,on a reasonable one .

Many thanks (again!) Robert.

Whay you have said and illustrated has made up my mind and I shall rebuild the "good" turbo.

One oddity is that the rebuild kit contains 2 bearings -one spare for next time ?.
