Does anybody know the exact function of the balance pipe on a twin carb manifold ? Edited by Nicky on 10th Mar, 2005. |

As the firing order goes 1342, it means that 1 and 2 fire after each other as well as 3 and 4. So if you number the inlet ports 1 and 2, it goes 11 22 11 22, etc. At lower revs the piston can fall/flutter and the balance pipe is there to allow the air (moving) to carry on moving and flow along the balance pipe. Thus keeping the inertial ramming effect up and the pistons high as well. Improves low end torque. Part of the reason Amals/Webers/etc are so noise is the sound signature of this setup. If you make the port too big, the air in it has it's own inertia and if you make it too small, not enough flows. Downton used to sell manifolds where you could use different length bits of rubber hose, thus giving a bit of tune. Maniflow seem to make theirs smaller. Big ports sod up flow and the original manifold was crap beacuse of this. Obviously things which influence the inertial effect off the gas influence how it responds. Obviously stroke is a key one, as well as cam profile (to a lesser degree) port size as well as what trumpets/tubes you have strapped on there as well.

I'm also the only person who thinks this. I think it's a good idea if you wanted outright power whilst retaining SU carburettors, and had the facilities to make identical needles and balance the carbs in situ. That said, I consider it a waste of effort. You'd be better spending your spare hours (that you would have wasted on making and optimising a twin setup) working in BurgerKing at ?3.20/hour and use your earnt pennies to buy a hybrid turbo, or a megasquirt/jolt ignition system, whilst retaining a single (proven) HIF44. Good explanation of the balance pipe though Stu. It's something i've never really thought of 'why it's there'. I just saw it was and thought nothing more of it (like most peeps i guess)

I'm not happy with the answer "it just does, allright". I believe in my twin idea and I reckon I've got a good way of creating the needles as well. The problem is getting decent flow into the mouths, balanced and static as well. (No spinning) it's harder than it looks. I reckon it might provide surprising results! I've convinced myself and that's the end of it Bugger off, I'm getting there. |
