Hi everyone
I am new to this forum and i am currently working on a turbo project.
I've got a question regarding oil coolers.
Is it necessary to run an oil cooler with my engine?

The engine is a 1293 Morspeed engine with sc box, t3 cam, big valve head, etc.
I will be running a water cooled t2 turbo on mirage manifolds.
The reason i ask is because i have heard of other people with a similar set up running without the oil cooler.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Adam

get an oil temp gauge in there and test it.
if your old gets hot fit a cooler.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Anything over 120 degrees C

I'd be worried if oil temps regulary saw 120c, and even if they just frequented, i'd be wanting to fit an oil cooler to try and maintain an oil temp of around 90c.

Its better to fit a small cooler, with a thermostat, so that when the oil temps are low during winter, you are not over cooling, but will 'top up' in the hotter months, even whith the thermostat open and full flow through the cooler it will take the edge off those high temperatures, not necessarily control it to a set temperature

Don't we agree that the oil should be above 100deg? If not, water won't disappear.

I think that an oil temp of around 100deg is about ideal.

The oil temp on missuses golf gti sits rock solid at 102deg in normal driving once its warmed up and never goes over 120deg if your thrapping it.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

We have discussed this before, and the oil temperature does not need to be above 100c for water to evaporate. How do you think cloths dry hanging on the line at 20c?

Ive got another question that is sightly off topic.

What is the best way to plumb in the water side of my turbo.

Could i put it in the heater line by running a pipe from the head to the turbo then from the turbo into the heater line or would this not work?

I'll bet you did.

Please don't mind my ravings as that's all they are. Apparently.
